is it just me, or is the tach on my zx-6r easy (NOT hard) to read? why do so many people complain about it? i've ridden hard in all types of lighting and situations, even rain at night (don't ask), and i have never had a problem reading my tach. seems to me that the zx-6r has so few problems that stupid journalists almost have to make some up. [:CantSeeShit]
I've never really had a problem reading it, but I dont usually look at it anyway. I shift when I want and if I get too high in the revs I can see the orange shift light out of the corner of my eye. I've had the bike about a year and by now I can usually tell where the revs are at just by sound and feel. Only complaint I have with the instrument cluster is the mode and reset buttons. They are kinda hard to get to while riding. A better control system on the handlebar where the lap timer button is would be better I think.

I think the whole idea is to put the things you NEED while riding, i.e., turn signals, horn, lap timer (for track), hi-beam switch, kill switch, where it is easily accessible while riding. Mode and reset are not needed while moving.
Didn't Kawi modify the '06 shield to make the tach more readable??

You have never wanted to change between your clock and your trip while riding? I don't want a bunch of buttons on the handlebar to get in the way, but I'm sure they could come up with some kind of control to handle all three functions. Or maybe just have a permanent clock display, that would work too I guess. I don't wear a watch and have a bad habit of losing time when I go riding

Nope I never have but that's just me. I seem to never use the clock and I only switch from the trip meter to the odometer to occasionally check my total milage but that's when I'm not riding, like when I do periodic maintenance so I know when to schedule the next time to do it. I understand what you're saying but some will argue you should be focused on the road, blah, blah, blah. I ride mostly to escape and have fun, so if I lose track of time I don't really care. I'll come home when I'm hungry, just keep dinner warm is all I ask. [8D]

I hear ya, I don't usually worry about what time it is while riding, but last sunday I wanted to make sure I made it back for the motogp race. I like to ride with my tank a little low to decrease weight (more flickable and easier wheelies ) so I had to check between my trip and clock often.
Personally, I didn't have any problems with the display. I can see why it might be hard for someone a tad taller than me to see the tach though because the windscreen is miniature and almost non existant.. but I threw the Puig on and it made it a million times easier to see without hunching if I'm in an upright position.
I have never had a problem seeing my tach in any sort of light or weather conditions. And I love the digital display. I do wish it had a permanent clock display but it's not that big of a deal.

You shouldnt be looking at your damn tach anyway, you should be looking ahead. But magazine just said its hard to read the tach because of the stock windscreen, when you have your head up the screen blocks it and therefore it is hard to see it. Nothing more nothing less, just BS that should never be even out down on paper.
Tach isn't different afaik on the '06. Its the windscreen. They made it a little taller because everyone was complaining they couldn't see the top half of the tach on the '05 because of the shorter windscreen...
I had no problems either, until I to the ZX to the racetrack where the millisecond-glance at the tach wasn't sufficient to see anything. I use the shift light exclusively, now. But even that isn't quite large enough at those speeds.
I dont really look at my tach anyway. After I did the ECU mod I moved my shift light up to 15000k and I only use that when I'm hauling ass or racing on the freeway.
One of the things that I really liked about the 636 is the blue gauge mode. Looks hot and easy to ready. Click to enlarge

I think the "hard to read tach" issue is kind of due to sitting to upright, and the windscreen blocking the view.
It cant be the lights, otherwise, we have blind bastards working at those Mags.
