idiot revved my bike while it was cold - whats the damage?
so i was walkin out of work with a coworker and he says he wants to sit on my bike. normally i don't let that happen but he's ridden before and i'm cool with his brother. so he sits on my bike and he's already fumbling for the engine start and he finds it. not 2 seconds after the bike starts he revs it damn near redline about twice. WTF?! are u retarded?!
and now i'm concerned that he may have caused some otherwise avoidable damage to the engine internals. should i be this concerned? it feels like it isn't running as smooth but that could just be my head.. god i'm pissed!

I was always told not to rev up a cold engine, only time will tell.

it's not ideal, but for such a short period of time (im assuming) it should be fine. Punch him though.

i see squids do it every day , they start their bike and rev the shit out of it..lol
you will more then likely be absolutely fine and you already know not to make a habit of revving a cold bike , i wouldnt sweat it if i were you ..
the reason you dont rev a cold bike is #1 your pistons expand when the bike warms up and when they are cold you dont have the proper piston to cylinder wall clearances and #2 all you internal engine parts may not be properly lubricated until the bike has been running for a little bit ..

It is probably in your head. Reving a bike cold causes a lot of wear because the oil hasnt had a chance to run its path. If you are really paranoid about your bike, id take it to the shop and have them inspect it and never let your coworker touch your bike again

i guess i'm just being too worried about it. but man every time i think about it and how that douche pulled that shit i just wanna rage and walk to his department so i can bust his face..
lesson learned. don't ever let a guy sit on your bike unless he's just gonna sit. leave the keys IN YOUR POCKET!

One time like that won't hurt it.
If you were to do it every day though, you would enlarge the cylinder walls permanently.

OMR makes the perfect points. as well, another major consideration is the fact that oil pressure is significantly higher due to it being cold and being more viscous.
the resultant pressure build can (not really on bikes to my knowledge or newer cars anymore tho) blow seals out.
at one time, seals could be blown out due to that very action.. thanks to tighter tolerances, relief valves incorporated into the oil system, and better materials and all, this is a rare occurance, but nonetheless, it sticks in my mind.. being it builds pressure faster because it can't flow as fast as when it's hot, it also won't reach shit like the cams and all either in a timely manner.. luckily i'm sure there was still a film of oil on everything internally, but ya.. once or twice accidently.. not a big deal.. make a habit of it and you'll fuck the piston skirts up and rock all kinds of shit in ways you don't wanna know about. lol
