You don't have much more than 4mm of pad material when MC brakes are new. Tires are unforgivable to slack on. Take the MSF, you use their bike. It's cheap, low powered, and you'll get comfortable while you learn. You'll also get to skip your riding test when you go for your license, which I'm sure you don't have.
