The heat controller is mandatory, but you can choose single or dual control. If you are running multiple heated items (jacket+gloves) control the how much heat each produces. You could run a single controller for multiple items, but I fear one item would be much more hot than the other and you would have to burn one part of the body to keep the other from freezing.
