05 ZX6RR Turns Off While Riding. Help!

I have an 05 ZX6RR, that as of late, will just shut off randomly while riding. It usually will give no warning, no stuttering or anything, then all of a sudden it's off. Power is still on based on all lights and dash still working. It only seems to happen on longer rides in the afternoon when it's hotter outside. It did it to me on my last track day as well. I just let it sit for a few minutes, then she fires right up and goes just fine. Until it shuts off again.. Now, I don't have the kickstand sensor on my bike at all, which I heard was a common issue. I also checked the gas tank vent line, which happened to be cut off right at the fitting. Is that a problem, does there have to be a full length line? The other thing I heard is the ECU getting too hot or something like that? I need Help! Any advice or input would be MUCH appreciated!!

Thanks for the quick reply. Is checking the ECU codes something I can do myself, or have to take it to a shop to do? I read about 3 modes: user mode, dealer 1 mode, and dealer 2 mode. Should I try and do dealer 1 mode or dealer 2? Also, is there any place I shouldn't ground the wire to that might cause a short or something? Again, thanks for the help!

Well I tried to pull the codes using the "How To" you linked, also using some videos I found. The "FI" light won't blink at all. I tried to access both dealer modes, but neither would flash the FI light. So either I am not getting a good contact from the connector, or I am doing it wrong (which I can't see happening with how simple it seems). If there were no error codes, would the FI light still flash a code that states that? Or would it just not blink, as is my case? Electrical crap is really frustrating! Lol

Check your sidestand/kickstand switch. I had similar symptoms, the bike would die at the same place on my morning commute, I removed the switch and it's been fine ever since. When I stripped the switch I found it was two copper prongs running along a copper track on a pcb, once the lines on the pcb wear it stops making contact and kills the ignition, just like trying to ride away the stand down.

Thanks for the suggestion. But my bike hasn't had that switch/sensor since I have had it. The previous owner must have taken it off, or the ZX6RR doesn't come with it. I was also thinking it could be the tip over sensor maybe, but I don't know how I could determine that or not.

My bike did the same last week in France on holiday, had the side-stand switch changed 2 years ago. it is at a Kawasaki garage in France and I am waiting for it to be brought back to England, my mileage is now 62,000 miles and I have had it from new.

Have you worked out what has gone wrong to give me an idea, this seems different from when I had the side-stand replaced and you don't even have a stand.

i just had the same problem with my 05 RR, im pretty sure its the overheating of the computer and its only when im driving in the city and making frequent stops, which doesnt give the max airflow it needs to cool like on the highway. i wonder if u can get a heat shield or something for under the seat?

E. C. U! It happened to me , same symptoms , dealer could not figure it out. I lost an entire riding season and a perfectly good fuel pump which they said it was that cost me 8oo bux, for nothing. Rectifier was fine, fuel line don't matter how long as long as its not crimped fuel pump was good, ks sensor was good, air filter was clean only thing left was ecu. I took bike home , bought one from a guy here on forum ( thank you) installed it 2 yrs ago n been riding ever since! Trust me dude, replace your ecu...

Well, I have an update, although not a good one. I was pretty much 100% sure it was the ECU, thanks to everyones help on here. However, due to mine being an RR model, I was having trouble finding an ECU to replace mine with. I have been nursing the bike for the last couple weeks or so, taking it very slow on the highway and staying in the far right lane so when I did turn off I could just pull over and stop. It would shut off pretty much at least once a day on my way back home from work. I would pull over and let it sit for a minute or 2, and she would fire back up with no problems and I'd make it all the way home.

However, yesterday it shut off and I pulled over like normal and let it cool down. But when I went to turn it back on it had a horrible knock! I'm pretty sure it spun a rod bearing. Had to have it towed home. I removed the ECU and Relay box and disconnected the battery, hoping by resetting all of that it would right it's spark or fueling. But, it was definitely a rod knock. So now I have to rebuild or replace the motor because of the ECU. Starting another thread to get info on that ordeal.

going to get a new ECU, found this company in the UK, spoke to them today and said there are 2 different ECU's for our model and have different pins in different place so not interchangeable unless you reset the pins. He said it was unusual and may point to problems with the first one. If you change the ECU you may need to find out which one you will need.

Here is the link to the UK company, I will post up if it cures the problem once I have changed the ECU.
