Inaccurate fuel light

My 08 ZX6R starts showing the low fuel warning at about half a tank. When I get the fuel warning I end up putting in about 2.5 gallons to fill the tank full. I believe these tanks hold 4.5 gallons total.

My question is, this cant be the way the low fuel sensor was designed, can it? If its malfunctioning, what would I need to replace? I think I read that this particular sensor is on the fuel pump.

Advice please.

well...look at this; It's in your benefit and at least your know you're at 1/2 a tank. Mine turns on when I have a 1/3 left in my tank.

Yeah, I get that.

The only thing is that when the light comes on, my odometer is no longer displayed and I get the flashing FUEL message in its place. So even though I have another easy 60-80 miles of range, it gets hard to judge just when I need to refuel.

you should be able to toggle through the odo- menu back to the trip meter. Then after another 10 miles or so it should give you a fuel reminder.

Press "MODE". That will clear the warning light. Press it twice again to get yourself back to the trip odometer.

are you sticking the whole gas filler in?? or are you taking it out a lil bit and filling it all the way to the whole at the top?? if youre not doing the latter, that would be the issue

Hi all, let me explain this: the fuel tank has 4.5 gal of cap. when you consume 3 first gallons the fuel light start on noticing you that you have 1.5 gallons left of reserve, mine consume like 31 milles per gallon on city and more than 50 milles on highway, that means that you have like 50 more milles on city to find a fuel station or 75 milles on highway to find it too, remember that all bikes are made for many countries (im from Peru) and sometimes cant find a fuel station near, so thats why kawi engineers advice you to refuel, hope make myself clear.

The light should come on when you have .9 remaining. Mine usually comes on around 130 miles.
