Noob here so hopefully this is a dumb question with an easy answer. Trying to change the rear brake pads but the new ones barely fit so there's no space between them for the rotor. I double checked that they're the right size.
you need to compress the caliper piston
it should go in easy by putting some pressure on it between the pads
loosen cap on brake reservoir first and make sure you don't force too much fluid to spill over
There doesn't appear to be a rear brake reservoir. I'm looking at the picture in the owners manual and it's not there on my bike. Is that even possible? x.x
Found it. It was hidden behind a panel for some reason. Probably something to do with the aftermarket rear set? I loosened the cap but still can't push it in...
The piston may have come out too far and you need to make sure it goes in squarely.
Don't apply pressure to just one side other wise it will get cocked in the caliper.
Try to push on both sides of the pad equally to push the piston in.
No don't rebuild your caliper. I'll bet they thought it was seized. Unless the caliper was seized (which it wasn't if you got it reinstalled with the new pads), there's no need to rebuild it.
Nothing against you or personal, but you're clearly a newbie to wrenching on bikes and rebuilding a caliper may be above your capabilities if you asked this question.
Again, please don't take this as an insult, just an observation on your experience level versus potential for screwups with a very important system on your bike.
No offense taken. I don't know anything about working on bikes but I'm trying to learn. Gotta start somewhere. This will be a good facepalm to look back on.
I'll leave the caliper alone then. Thanks again for the tips everyone.
100% agreed. Gotta start somewhere! Hell I went to MMI with the sole experience of changing brake pads and oil on one bike and one car. Then after that Suzuki and Yamaha saw fit to certify me as a motorcycle, quad, PWC, generator, and snowmobile mechanic. Trust me when I say I understand needing to start somewhere.
I've always used what in the UK is called a 'G-Cramp', works every time just make sure that there's adequate spare volume in the Master Cylinder reservoir to accommodate the fluid being pushed back, if not get yourself down to your local chemists/pharmacy/drugstore and buy a plastic disposable syringe to draw some out.
