Default How to shave your seat

tools needed: flat screwdriver, pliers, sharp knife(steak), rough grit sand paper, and staple gun.

i did this on my 04, but i bought one that was shaved for my 01 and loved it! it takes around a hour and may need for you to touch it up some after your done.

1. remove your front seat

2. remove the staples that hold on the seat cover using a flat head screwdriver to pry them up.

3. with the pliers take off each staple and carefully place it in the trash or somewhere where you wont step on it.

4. remove the seat cover to uncover the foam seat.

5. with the steak knife, start to cut from the center of the seat aprox. a quarter or half inch deep towards the front of the seat. you may need to rock the knife back and forth like you are carving a turkey. heres a pic of the seat on the bike and half inch shaved off.

*IF YOU DONT CUT IT SMOOTH DONT WORRY ABOUT IT. THE ROUGH GRIT SAND PAPER WILL FIX THAT PROBLEM ENOUGH TO FEEL COMFORTABLE WHEN RIDING.*

6. sit on the bike and guage how much you need to keep taking off. it helps to put both you feet on the pegs and get in a comfortable riding position. i needed to take more off the rear to take some pressure off my nuts.

7. i worked each side cutting aprox. a 4 inch diameter so i wouldnt cut too much. heres what i got before i applied sand paper.

8. sand the foam by applying light-medium pressure on the sand paper. if you press too hard you will catch any big chunks that stick out and tear a hole in the seat.

9. re-staple the seat cover using the staple gun while slightly tugging on the seat cover so that it fits loosely. when its on it should look like stock.

*DONT TUG ON IT TOO HARD, BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO COLLAPSE SOME WHEN YOU SIT ON IT. IF ITS ON TOO TIGHT IT WILL TEAR.*

but when you apply pressure or sit on it, the seat cover should depress, but return back to stock form.

10. put the stock seat on and do any more modification too it.

heres the finished product, any questions should be posted here so that it may assist others when attempting this mod.

Just to add my $.02 that may help some who are doing this. Great pics and instructions, arturo3rd. I did the exact same thing on my bike with a seat I bought from e-bay for $30. The only difference was that I used an electric knife (thousands sold during Thanksgiving.) The electric knife worked like a charm.

Just my .02 also. After I cut mine down (used 32 tooth hacksaw blade which worked very nicely) I used a high speed orbital sander and 40 grit sand paper and just barley touched the seat with the grinder and it looks now like it is supposed to be like that. If I can get some pics I will. It looks very professional.
Thanks

how do you get the seat cover back on whithout having it bunch up so much? I'm having a bitch of a time getting it to look right...... where do you start stapling first, then how do you go about getting it all even without one side or the other getting too tight???

has anyone glued the seat cover to the foam first before stapleing to get it to contour to the foam?
