Default Painting fairings and tank

I've been looking around for a while for some good quality paint to paint my fairings and tank. My question to you fellow kawiforum'ers is....

1) what is a good primer... Plastic or regular primer or does it really matter?
2) is it smart to buy the primer filler incase of any imperfections in the fairings this would help fill them in?
3) where is the best place to buy supplies? I want to go flat black on the fairings and tank.
4) has anyone noticed a significant difference in rattle can vs air gun? Given environment is the same.
5) can the same paint be used on the tank that's used on the fairings?

I appreciate any advice in advance!!

Hey there. I am about to paint my tank and fairing also on a dedicated track bike. Although I haven't actually painted them yet I have done a lot of research and most of the work already. See below..........

1) what is a good primer... Plastic or regular primer or does it really matter?
You can get some good primer such as what is shot out of a HVLP gun or you get also use stuff from UPOL or even Rustoleum will work. Just depends on your budget.

2) is it smart to buy the primer filler incase of any imperfections in the fairings this would help fill them in?
Not sure what yiou mean here but if your talking about any type of repairs on your fairings than yes. You will want to use some type of bondo or even UPOL Dolphin glaze to repair any damaged areas that your going to paint.

3) where is the best place to buy supplies? I want to go flat black on the fairings and tank.
Best place would be an auto paint store if you have one near by. If not....everyting can be obtained online.

4) has anyone noticed a significant difference in rattle can vs air gun? Given environment is the same.
Many aerosols will not give a finish that you would be happy with (unless you really don't care how it looks. A better option (if you have an air compressor) would be to buy a HVLP gun (I got mine from Harbor Freight to my door for $25).

5) can the same paint be used on the tank that's used on the fairings?
Yes.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Go to a auto supply store in your area, bring a piece of the fairing and they can help you more than you can imagine.

I am doing my 250 and have spent the last few weeks/month in prep. Air gun will be better than rattle, hands down. Though rattle can can look good. Don't get me wrong.

I went to a local Sherwin Williams Automotive and got all my supplies for under $150. The same paint and primer should be used on all parts. And I have never used filler primer, seems more like a mess than just filling it with some epoxy resin, or something flexible and then sanding and painting.

Good luck.

The best is a good automotive primer from an auto body paint shop... but if you want to use rustoleum you will likely be just fine... I have had good results with rattle can primer.

2) is it smart to buy the primer filler incase of any imperfections in the fairings this would help fill them in?
I use filler primer to cover any minor blemishes most of the time. If you aren't concerned about weight, go that route. On the tank I use self etching primer if it is bare metal.

3) where is the best place to buy supplies? I want to go flat black on the fairings and tank.
Any automotive paint shop, English Color is where I go down here in TX.

4) has anyone noticed a significant difference in rattle can vs air gun? Given environment is the same.
Yes, a huge difference. Not saying it can't be done with a can, but I personally can do 1000000000 times better with a gun.

5) can the same paint be used on the tank that's used on the fairings?
yep.

Here is my last paint job I did.. I will be doing at least 2 more this year.

Thanks... I did it in a home built paint booth (drop cloths to make a room in my dad's barn). It was my 4th or 5th paint job using a real spray gun. Prep work and a good environment with the right tools is the key.

Sure, but nothing will replace practice and experience. Buy extra paint and have scrap pieces to practice on. GO SLOW... 3 light coats beats one heavy coat EVERY time. Smooth and steady, DO NOT RUSH it, work in a clean area out of the wind and spend the money on a decent paint gun and compressor.
