Default New Rider Safety Gear Suggestions

Hey guys, I am picking up my new bike this week. I scored a black 2009 250R with 100 miles on for cheap. Bike is mint.

I have been doing some research on some gear, I pretty much need everything. I have other gear from offroad riding and racing with ATVs but nothing for 2 wheels.

I am about 6 foot 215lbs. I been looking at a lot of differant ICON brand jackets and pants. Leather seems to be the best as far as protection goes, but being the middle of summer are textiles an acceptable alternative? What does everyone recommend for boots? Helmet? Gloves?

I will post some links up later of what I was looking at, but any feedback would be helpful. I want to enjoy the bike but also be safe and comfortable

Do you have a budget? or money is no object?

Get jacket with CE approved armor.

Get helmet with Snell approved rating, if you plan on doing performance riding school (not MSF school) or doing track days; Most track day events or performance schools (if not all of them) requires Snell approved helmets.

In b4 Snell haterz~

Wear a jacket...so long as it isn't a windbreaker. If I had only worn my jacket, my elbow wouldn't be ripped up. If I wore pants with knee pads, my knee wouldn't be fukt. All gear, all the time (easy for me to say after the fact).

I got about $1000 budget for gear. Do street bike helmets run the same as MX? I wear an XL in MX and offroad helmets.

Here is what I am looking at:

ICON Victory Hero Jacket with Shoulder, Elbow and Back Armor

ICON Arc Mesh Pants with CE knee armor

ICON Merc Long Gloves with Carbon Fiber

I am undecided on boots and a helmet right now...The bike is black, so I am thinking maybe go with a black/red helmet and then get some black/red gloves and just black boots?

All black?

Get a bright and shiny helmet then! Everyone that I ride with either has LED's on their bike or really bright and flashy helmets. Apparently, it helps with night riding so other drivers can see you easier, but I thought it was because they were being "tuner-esque".

I bought most of my gear online, and I thought it was a mistake. Just go into a bike shop, try on what you want to buy, and then see if the shop might have a better deal, if not, go online. Especially w/helmets, every style is different

Ya I was kinda worried about the all black too...Hmmm...

What if I did a jacket like this instead? Its textile not leather:

textile is fine...but make sure it fits properly, because i had went down with my textile and the elbow armor moved out of place, even though the chest is the right size, and i ended up getting some road rash. so make sure it fits.

There are a lot of good online stores out there that will take returns also, but its easier to go to a shop and test fit. Do your measurements and read reviews online of how others have fit into it, and that also helps.

Ride Safe!

I'm all black, but I guess i'm also the "tuner-esque" guy with 160 green LEDs all over the bike.

HJC FS-15 Carbon Helmet (Carbon Fiber) -$325 @ newenough.com
Icon Accelerant Perforated Leather Jacket (All Black) - $325 @ newenough.com
Icon Merc Gauntlet Gloves (All Black) - $100 anywhere
Sidi Vertigo Air Boots (Black/Red) - $300 anywhere

$1,050

I love all my gear. The gloves take some getting used to since the seams are on the inside of the fingertips.

My next question is then would you rather have it a little tight or a little loose? I am right between a Large and XL. The large is a little tight, not uncomfortable, but snug. And the XL is a little loose. This seemed to be the case with a few of the brands I tried on. Suggestions?
