I bought my bike (1995 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-9R) back in June and I've been getting parts to get it on the road. Once everything was on the bike I went to start it and it only made a slight click noise. I tested the relay and according to the results the relay was bad. While the relay was unplugged I hit the start button and the starter turns over. I also jumped the terminals of the harness that go to the relay and got the fuel pump to turn over. So I know the fuel pump works and I know the starter works. Im just wondering why the relay isn't turning over the fuel pump and allowing the bike to start.
Please email if you can help me out. (jharmon718@yahoo.com)
Ok so I figured out what my problem was... the battery wasn't fully charged which wasn't allowing the relay inside the junction box from working. I charged the battery and it turned over and the fuel pump was working.
Now I have a new problem ... the bike wont idle.
I took spun the gas tank over the rear seat and took off the airbox. I sprayed carb cleaner into the carbs while twisting the throttle and it ran. As soon as I let off the throttle the engine shuts off.
I drilled out the covers over the pilot screws and unscrewed them and cleaned them off. Called a few people and looked online to find out how many turns they should be adjusted by and found to turn them all the way in then out two turns. Tried that and still no idle. So I drained the fuel out of the float bowls and checked the floats and jets. The float of the #1 cylinder was sticking so I loosened it and sprayed it with carb cleaner an now it doesn't stick.... unfortunately the battery was drained by this point so I was unable to try starting it again.
Any other advice on why it wont idle would be greatly appreciated.
Yes. As I am new to carburetors I do not know his far the idle thumbwheel should be turned. I am trying to look up as much as I can online but I can't find out what the problem is.
I have a friend that works at a motorcycle shop and he took apart my carbs and took out the jets, needle valves, etc. And put them in an ultrasonic hot tank. So the carbs are clean.
Just bought new spark plugs and it still will not idle. I took an infrared thermometer and aimed it at all four exhaust pipes at the manifold after I got it running with some carb cleaner and cylinder 1 was at 98°, cylinder 2 was at 103°, cylinder 3 was at 298°, and cylinder 4 was at 310°. So obviously there is something wrong with cylinders 1&2. I just don't know what yet.
hi, the idle thumb wheel should be turned untill you acheive idle. this adjuster opens the thottle by small amounts. if your carbs are badly out of balance one or more carbs may not be opened far enough for those cylinders to be geting enough mixture to idle. proper balancing requires the use of a set of manometers. also does your bike have ok compression on all 4 cylinders. maybe your bike shop friend can help you check these things. hope this is of some help!
Ok its been a while but I got the bike running again.... still wont idle right. Carbs are clean, set the float height, turned the pilot screws to 3 1/2 turns out and get a tank of fresh gas. The bike backfiresand I was wondering if I should change the spark plugs again or could this be fixed by getting the carburetors synchronized?
Sounds like a plug or coil problem affecting two cylinders. You can't set the idle if only two cylinders are firing properly. Check the condition of the HT leads and plug caps. As it's cylinders 1 & 2 and you have a wasted spark system it's unlikey to be a coil issue, but you can never be sure. Start by checking that all 4 plugs are sparking.
My experience, btw, has been that out of a set of 4 new plugs there's a high chance of a faulty one.
There's also a chance that the two offending cylinders are completely starved of fuel, but you've done most of the checks on the carbs. Once the bike has a reasonable idle you will have to tweak the individual idle screws and synch the carbs, but your problem sounds more basic than that.
I have a 96 zx9 that will turn over but won't start. Why is that
