First bike- Ninja 500r 2006 14k, $2300
This will be mainly for commuting but also for a little freeway action.
I have dirt bike experience but not much else.
This is the craiglist posting [URL="http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/mcy/3387606454.html"]
What do you guys think? a good buy?
And what should I look for mechanically wise while inspecting the bike, I have no friends that are mechanically inclined but I know the basics.
I might buy this ASAP so lemme know what you guys think.

That looks like a really good deal.
I was willing to spend $3k for the same bike about 6 months ago.
I would jump on that ASAP... as far as what to check for.
Check chain condition, chain slack, tire(s) tread and condition. They will need replacing if they are still factory.
Also make sure you ride around the block before you seal the deal, make sure to run up the gears... and check that both brakes work properly.
Other than that, there is other things to check but nothing as important as this stuff.
But like i said it looks like a good deal, try and get all service invoices and records, and ask when he last had oil change.

I'd offer him $1800, go as high as $2K. Still not a bad deal at 2300, but i'm sure he listed it at that price knowing he would get haggled down a bit.

I'd aim for keeping it at $2,000. Going by the pictures, it looks pretty good.

Thanks. I'll dig into this. Now the bike has changed to a 2007 ninja (ex?)250 with 9k miles and light usage. It's black. haha. That and more MPG's sealed the deal. $2000 with a helmet, jacket, and gloves.

Don't buy or accept a used helmet. If a helmet comes with the bike tell him he can keep it, or throw it away.

250 is a better first bike than the 500.
MSF course and gear. Boots are essential - proper motorcycle boots. As posted, don't wear a used helmet.

Or keep that helmet for display only. But yeah, never wear a used moto helmet.

Can you elaborate? Other than the semi grossness of it.

helmets are a one time use item. after a crash or a significant hit the material inside that absorbs the impact does't serve it's function as well or at all any more. You can get them inspected, but you're better off buying something on clearance for you first lid. You can get a decent helmet for like $70-$80
