I have noticed lately when I start my bike in the morning the engine has a ratteling or a ticking noise.. It sounds like it is the cam chain tensioner but it goes away when it gets hot.. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem or might no what it is.

yes I am actually fighting with this problem as we speak. It could be a few things.. This model of kawi is notorious for failing cam chain tensioners (CCT's) I've heard its best to buy a MANUAL CCT as they are much easier to install as well as adjust...

Another thing it could be is the valves, when is the last time you checked them? Valves do make a nice ticking noise but that is normal with saki's.. but if its REALLY loud then it isnt right. Is it varying on/off through diffrent RPMs? Mine wouldnt do it on Idle but as I gave it more throttle it would do it on and off at different RPMs.. this is a sign that it is the CCT. As it heats up things expand and the chain may not move around like it did when it was cold..

I actually purchased a manual CCT today it ran me about $60 but hopefully when that gets here it will fix the problem. Keep us updated! oh btw.. its a bitch to get the stock CCT off!

I'm not to familiar with the cam chain tensioner, However any thing that's loose will make moore noise when cold before heat expansion, Now the valves will tick when cold, That's normal. They should quiet down once the engine warms up.To get a good listen of the valves, Take a long screw driver put the metal end on the engine under the cams, Now put your ear to the handle. Do this when its cold & again when hot. Move it around & do it on both sides, This way you can get to know whats normal & whats not.

Yeah it works, kinda like putting a glass to the wall. The sound gos right threw the metal. Its like putting your ear right up against the engine, only you don't get burnt & you don't remove any thing to get to it. A Kawasaki mechanic showed me this years ago. If you want to get a really good listen, Use a stethoscope, Not everyone has one but I'm lucky cause Linda's a nurse. So is the daughter, & the other one is in nursing school.
