He said it takes several hours to do...perhaps it requires some sort of calibration, in which case that may actually be realistic.
Regardless, I'll take them in for round 1, and we'll see what happens. I won't be able to take them in until next week at the earliest, so I'll post up after I get them back.

Ditto here. Same problem. Noticed today riding was at 7k at 55mph!! 9k at 75mph. Is this high revving on the freeway good for the engine? My first bike so a little worried somewhat.

Go back and read the whole thread. Then go and figure out if you have a PERFORMANCE problem, which may be bad, or an INDICATION problem, which you can compensate for. Likely you can hear if it's a performance problem, and you will see a definate drop in gas mileage.
Either way, there is no real fix other than replace cdi, replace tach, repeat. Hopefully you're under warranty and can get Kawi to replace the parts for free, and hopefully you get a good one that will fix your problem.

Any of you guys/gals that find out you have an "issue", please see my thread to file a complaint with NHTSA about it. The more actual legit complaints that get filed about this, the more likely that something will actually get done about the problem (hopefully it will lead to a recall or at least a free repair for all those affected and out of warranty - most 08's should be out of factory warranty or getting close).
Formal complaint with NHTSA about 08/09 Ninja 250 tach issue

Mine has 130 miles on it. I took it to the dealer Mon. and they said that it is fine and won't even look at it. They don't see any problem. I'm going to call Kawasaki on Monday.

Fixed
I had the same problem. It is so irritating. I had my dealer look at it and they called Kawi. Kawi said it was an "ignitor" They ordered it and replaced it. Good as new (so far...)
It is not the tach. Just the ignitor, a little 3"x3" black box that costs $400.
PS.
While the warranty still covered this i must say, dealerships suck.

my dealer is refusing to help me so I am going to call Kawi, explain the situation to them, and then call my dealer. I will tell the dealer to call Kawi and fix my damn bike!

The tach can be off a little bit, but usually not by a whole 2k rpm. You might have just not shifted it all the way into 6th and you might have actually been in 5th, or as others have said your clutch might need adjusting.

Back in the shop...
Dealer replaced ignitor, 3 days later it's acting up again. Dealer agreed to see my bike right away. Bike is currently at the shop.. again.
