Default Some 250 questions/mods

Hey guys. So I just got my 250R about a week ago now, going to be taking my Basic Rider Course in March/April, already got my motorcycle permit.

I admit I've taken it out a few times in the neighborhood to get the feel for it really quick. Doesn't seem too hard to adjust, as my balance on bikes and two-wheeled vehicles is good already and I drive stick in my car.

There is a blinker problem (the bike was dropped on its right side), and it's weird. The right side works fully (rear and front), though the front housing is off and the bulb is showing. However, the left side (rear) stays on - doesn't blink. The indicator light on the dash also stays still and the front bulb does not work I believe. I'm going to have to get that fixed for inspection--just wondering how I go about that. Do I need to remove the fairing to get to the connections?

Anyway, aside from all that, I really want to grab some mods for her. I have some quick ones in mind, and have searched around eBay and found hid kits, exhausts and fender eliminators/new led tails. I think those are in my ballpark, and I also heard that there is a mod to put like foot pegs sort of that will protect the plastics in case I crash (if somebody could tell me exactly what this is called that would be great and how much it would run me to install).

Any feedback on these things and the illegality of it? Will I pass inspection with these things?

MGP Growler Exhaust:

Ninja 250R Integrated LED Tail Light + Fender Eliminator

And if anyone can tell me if there's a quality hid kit for lo+hi beam? I don't plan on doing much night driving at all though.

Thanks fellas.

Here's a pic of her:

Also, does anyone know the best (or recommended) oil to use for an oil change? As well as recommended chain lube? I plan on doing these things before registering her--as well as replacing the air filter. Thanks!

theres a search function on the grey bar up top.

theres also an active hid thread in the 250 section.

and also if i were you, focus on learning how to ride and not modding your bike. the odds are against you and unless money isnt an issue, i think you should hold onto that money.

I had an MGP on my bike for about 10 minutes. Then took it off and sold it. It is obnoxiously loud.

I am going to learn how to ride and money isnt an issue. I was just wondering about the oil and chain lube preferences and if those mods would make me fail inspection?

honestly bro, I know it's tempting to mod but try to hold off until u get some miles under ur belt. statisticaly speaking, u will drop.ur bike at least once, when that happened, it will likely damage ur mods.

Yeah I'll probably hold off on the mods. Thanks for the advice.

Any advice on the best oil/chain lube to use for changes?

Thanks

I'm too sure myself as I'm also a noob, just got my bike about 4wks ago and so far only put 500miles to it . I drop my bike recently while driving over what seem like a tiny pot hole. I was going at only about 20 and that hole didn't seem like a danger to slow down or worth avoiding so I just casually glide over. When it did my front tires swirl a bit and because I wasn't expecting anything to happen I got nervous and break real hard and I think the wheel lock up and down she goes hehe. The hole was actually quite big but while moving it seem small to me. So lesson learned, no matter how small it is, don't take any chances! avoid holes in the ground!

For me it's been a toss up between two brands of chain lube. Maxima & Dupont Teflon Multi-use

As far as engine oil goes, it's going to be your call. You may have to experiment with a couple of brands and weights to see what works better for your bike and riding conditions. Everyone will have their favorite and everyone will tell you something different. Just make sure that during your break in period to use some regular 10w-40 like, Kawi branded oil. Once your break in period is done then you can switch to a synthetic. When you decide to switch, just make sure you use oil that meets the motorcycles requirements. keep in mind that there are some non motorcycle specific oils that can be used as well.

Check with your state to see what the inspection requirements are for motorcycles. I know some state do not require some motorcycle to have turn signals. I would make sure all safety features, such as lights and turn signals are in proper working order regardless. You do not have to remove the fairing to disconnect the turn signal. I would just try replacing the bulb at this point. It can be changed just by removing the lens.

If you want to mod your bike, it is totally your decision to make, but as a new rider my advise would be keep them simple, functional and safety related to start. Here are a few easy first mods that are simple and safety related.
Horn mod
Headlight & Taillight upgrade
Brake Light Modulator

Also a list of Mods under $ 50.00
Get to know and enjoy your new bike.

Reviving this thread a little. I went through the Mods page and everything and I see some stuff but want recommendations from people here first hand and the link they got it.

Are there any legal fender eliminators and D.O.T. approved led tail lights that don't destroy the wallet? I don't mind paying a little extra but not crazy prices.

These are the two mods I want the most, and I don't want to cut or deal with crazy installation. Anyone have recommendations for the 250R?
