I'm just wondering how many miles you can realistically expect to get on a EX250.
I bought a 2002 EX250 with 13,xxx miles a week ago, and I'm wondering how many miles I could expect from it. It was sitting for 2 years due to a lost key & stator problems, and was salvaged 2 owners ago, it has a reconstructed title.
I'm going to change the oil & put in a new oil filter while I'm replacing the stator, is there anything else I should do to ensure a long engine life?
Be good about your riding habits, basically. Baby the clutch, don't throttle any harder than you have to, etc. Just baby it.
Depending on the dealer and/or mechanic that you talk to, there's a lot of debate about how may miles you can expect from your bike. 13k is just barely broken in, but local mechanics that I've talked to said you can get anywhere from 50k-75k out of it if you do it right. Just do regular maintenance like you should, and take good care of it.

Edit:
Okay, I'll go through the stickies on the n00b section and hopefully pick up some useful tips.
So how about oil, how often should I change it? I live in Massachusetts, and let my bike sit through the winter [down to zero, sometimes colder], under a motorcycle. I should clean out a space in my garage :P but it's packed full with stuff.
I am considering Rotella T6, as it was recommended on faq.ninja250.org. Any thoughts on that?
And if I only put 1K or less mi a year, should I change the oil every 2 years? or every year

theres no need to baby it.
obviously dont ABUSE IT, but use it how you would. it will be fine.
it will likely outlast the rider. OR it will be wrecked first.

This isn't true. You don't need to baby the bike at all. If anything, the 250 can take much abuse without faltering. I'm not saying you should practice clutch up wheelies all day, etc, but you can go WOT all the time, nothing is going to happen. Keep up with the maintenance, that's the only key. Miles mean nothing if the bike is well maintained (this goes for cars and everything else as well). Miles usually scare people away because they figure it's been driven a lot and will have problems, but that's pretty silly to think. Especially for the 250R's, if they sit, they generate a lot more issues than those which are driven often.
^^ yah so many posts about people who found a 250 that sat for 6 months or a year or two, and won't run. Nobody complaining about one that had issues after 10k, 30k, 50k miles etc.
