No start issues after carb clean

Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while and picked up a ton of helpful info here, but I'm now having my own problems which I need a bit of advice on.

I have an 89 Ninja 250R. It's in pretty good condition for an old bike and has been running well since I bought it a couple of months back. Last week it suddenly developed a flat spot in the 0-25ish percent throttle range. Add more throttle and the problem went away.

So I decided to pull the carbs out and clean them. I'm not overly experienced with bikes but am reasonably mechanically inclined, so I used tutorials online to get me through the process. One of the main jets was pretty blocked up, and I cleaned out a lot of build-up from the various passages using a carb cleaner spray.

I also wound out the idle mixture screws to the recommended 2.5 turns (one was at 2.5 already, the other was at 4 turns). In hindsight this may have been a bad idea.

With the bike back together (after hours of wrestling with the stupid air intake boots), I had trouble starting it. Once I got it started, it was running rough. I took it for a ride and it was ok until it warmed up. Once warmed up, it didn't want to hold an idle and it generally ran like a sack of rocks. No power at all.

I got it back to the garage and left it overnight. When I went to start it today, it spluttered a bit and then just didn't start at all. It cranks and cranks, but nothing will get it going.

I've checked the plugs (both new). But that's where my expertise ends. It's most likely an air/fuel issue, but I don't know where to start. I played around with the idle adjust knob (maybe a bad idea too) and now I don't know where it should be set.

Sorry for the long post. ANY advice would be awesome and really appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for that. I can't see anything obvious that I've done wrong.

Quick update though: I pulled the carb back off, and cylinder #2 is completely full of fuel (it was leaking from where the headers attach to the exhaust pipe). So something is way off...

Back to the drawing board.
