I'm in australia I have a learner approved 2012 model 650RL
If you are in the US I don't think you'll need to derestrict it? Not sure if there is a restricted model in the state as well.
And don't do it unless you've got the right licenrce or you insurance will be void - won't matter for a minor shunt but it will if there's a big claim against you.
It's easier to lift off an empty tank, but it doesn't really matter. Undo the fixing at the back of the tank - lift the seat off first - then pull out the clip securing the fuel line and pull the line off the tank - it's self sealing and will only leak a couple of drops. Part lift the rear of the tank and reach underneath to release the electrical connector for the pump and fuel gauge and oull the tank back and up. The fuel vent hose will come with it so you have to re-route that when you replace the tank.
There are also a couple of plastic pieces that you have take off first but that depends on the model and model year.
A tip - if you then remove the air box, when you refit it, before you fit and tighten the airbox screws make sure that you've left the fuel line properly routed or you have to take the air box off again. Ask me how I know lol.
hey guys. to get under there you have to remove (unbolt and lift works too) the tank. after the tank. remove your airbox. and then its really easy to get to.
In the EU new riders are restricted to 33 bhp for two years after passing their full tests. The restrictor limits the bike to this. Australia has a similar rule for learner riders. The 33 bhp category disappears in the EU from January as more age related restrictions come in, but there will now be a 47 bhp intermediate licence category.
For the states the 33 bhp kit would make the 650 an excellent starter bike.
We removed the ECU restrictor ourselves, very easy, under the seat/pillion seat.
For the restrictor screw my mechancic did it when the bike went in for its first service. Apparently they needed to take quite a few things off the bike to get to it properly, no way near as easy as previous models. Probably only cost me an extra $40 on top of my service charges.
I was told by the Kawa guys here that they won't have any unrestricted White Ninjas in Aus so thats why I bought the restricted one and them removed them.
I'm a girl so easier to colour co-ordinate with White/Black than Green. lol
How did you go with insurance / rego? I was planning on removing it when I get my R licence for a bit, and insuring it as a 650r.
Then when it comes time to sell just reinstall limiters and obviously cancel my insurance. The bike will most likely be traded for a zx6r, z800 or z1000 either way from Kawa.
Well that is the tricky part. My insurance company said it was fine as it is only a slight modification. Even though technically it isn't at all, since the model is still a 650! But VicRoads will not take the 'LAMS' off your rego. That is if you are in Victoria.
I am on a full license so am not doing anything illegal by riding a non restricted bike but Vic Roads said you are not allowed to remove the restrictors. So it could possibly affect your TAC insurance if you have an accident.
Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I'm assuming the 2013 650L model would be the same? Ie. removing the tank etc, gonna be on my open license within the next two months, so thinking about doing it.
Thanks for the quick reply Cozmonz. I've looked into the local laws and its fine for my situation. Is Rob's way the easiest method to get to the restrictor screw? I've never removed the tank before
"The 33 bhp category disappears in the EU from January as more age related restrictions come in, but there will now be a 47 bhp intermediate licence category."
The Harley 883cc Sportster and the 400cc Ninja have about 45 peak horsepower- maybe the UK rule makers looked at these 2 bikes.
My Honda 600cc cruiser has about 33 peak horsepower with a custom exhaust and rejetting, giving it about the same top speed as a 250cc Ninja, but it is slower in corners because it weighs more and scrapes the footpegs sooner, with its lower seat and frame.
Hey guys, sorry if I'm being plain retarded, but I'm having difficulties removing the entire air box.. Any hints? Pics maybe of where them bottom half of it is secured?
