You're not looking at the long run. Doing that increases, unnecessarily, the tension on the chain. This leads to premature wear of the chain and the cam and crank sprockets as well as the guides. There's nothing wrong with it ticking a bit. Every chain driven DOHC sportbike makes a tick. Leave it alone.
Whether or on it should be done, IDK, and Idc.
But like goingtoscotland said they all do it, I love reading people saying its a kawasaki thing lol. They all do it. I choose to use a manual tensioner. Everyone else do what you like.

I could see the "ghetto" way of doing it being 100% safe assuming you had a maximum amount of turns or maximum distance to back the bolt out before you stop.

I.e. if it doesn't click by this point just tighten the bolt back down and try again in a few months.

I dont know of anyone thats done the research to find out for sure though.
