Am I the only one that wears a half helmet on a sportbike?

Who else does it? Basically the reason for it is because I can't fit my earbuds under my full face helmet so I wear half helmet to listen to music while riding. But seriously I never see any other sportbike riders wearing half helmets so sometimes I get some weird looks. :Bike:

The only people who wear half helmets are the people who don't understand how a helmet works.

Negative on the peripheral vision and besides, you should always be scanning/knowing what's going on around you, ahead of you and behind you. A half helmet does not assist in this. As for your confidence in avoiding accidents, I hope you never have to find out how misguided you are. I have confidence in my abilities but I don't let that allow me to believe it will never happen to me so as to not protect myself. You can do everything right and still get into an accident.

Based on your original question it would seem you haven't been riding very long or you just aren't very observant. Always check your ego before throwing your leg over the bike. Just my $.02.

Eh yeah I mean I do have the necessary protection. Have 4 helmets 3 of them are full face and one of them is half face and I hate all of them. I usually only gear up though if I know I'm going to be speeding around or going for a real long ride. What I really wanna get is one of those bluetooth helmets where you can just like plug a phone or Ipod right into the helmet.

get different earbuds.
you sacrifice your safety over $30 earbuds. that's ridiculous.

I have no issue whatsoever using my earbuds under my full face helmet.

in general, you're doing it wrong.

No I sacrifice it because I'm sick of listening to the constant WHAAAAA of wind and engine noise. I want to listen to some tunes while riding just like I do in my car and I've tried fitting earbuds under a full face helmet its impossible unless you were to cut away some of the padding.

huh? my helmet has ear holes...since my earbuds go inside my ears, and my ears go inside those holes, there is no problem.

Just in case you're not a troll and are serious... I personally have worn earbuds under a full-face both around town and on longer highway trips.
I also have a Scala G9 that allows me to bluetooth music from my phone or any other bluetooth capable device, or plug in an older style device. It gets loud enough that all I have to do is put in ear plugs and I have no wind noise but can still hear my music clearly. Heck I've carried on phone conversations at 80+ mph with it with no problem. All in the safety and comfort of a full-face.

Full face for me always. I went down on St. Patrick's Day, suffered some road rash on my right knee through a pair of jeans (now have riding pants) and did some impressive damage to the full face helmet I was wearing that would have translated to a rather badly road rashed right cheek if I'd been wearing a half helmet. Best part: I did a little calculus after the wreck and estimated I was doing all of 6 mph when I hit the pavement.

This is the reason I can't ride sportbikes with people in the street. I wouldn't even want to be seen near a rider like this. what's the next question? which shorts are best for taking longer trips?

ride a sportbike. wear the gear. don't be embarrassing.

I taught my wife how to spot a squid... she asked me the other day when we saw a guy with no gloves and a t shirt.... she said.. "is it really THAT hot in gear....

I grew up on tracks racing go karts and quads n stuff... we wore our racing suits all day every race day. helmets, gloves boots, neck braces, the works. races were all day sunday. we survived. I don't recall anyone getting hauled off by medics because of overheating. If you have the right gear youll feel fine once in motion. don't be a sissy.

Got a short trip ? Don't want to gear up? consider purchasing a moped. good luck.

Just ask this guy:

Oh let me explain. That picture depicts a young man holding a new scorpion helmet with a piece of rebar pierced through it. Rebar is a thick wire used to keep concrete straight in buildings.

That piece fell off a truck and pierced through the helmet all the way through to the back. In a half helmet, that rebar would have gone through your lower jaw and exited through the back of your head.

I'd also like to add that every time a rock bounces off my visor I thank myself for making the right choice in helmet purchase.

I've seen some rocks so big that I'm sure I'd be missing teeth had I not had a full face.

(Notice how no-one who has responded supports a half-helmet on a sport bike. This would explain the funny looks.)

You're definitely rocking the wrong lid or wrong-sized lid. You shouldn't have to compromise your safety for your earbuds, and like the others mentioned, you can listen to music in full-face helmet comfortably. Seriously, do yourself a favor and spend an hour at your local helmet shop.

I wear a full face. With earbuds and ear plugs. I even wear a dot full face when I ride duel sport. I actually went down the other day going 30 on my drz400. Rashed the shit out if my arm and shoulder. Got slide marks on the helmet too. I was 4 miles from home.

A lot of "dickheads" around here wear no helmet, for both Harleys and sportbikes. The law was changed by conservatard legislators, both Dumbascraps and Repugnantcan'ts, at least partly for Little Sturgis and probably more from bribery by the wealthy asshats (with no hat now).

As somebody who has woken up in the ICU surrounded by people watching to see if he'll be able to talk, feed himself and not allowed to walk without somebody holding onto a harness; I have to say, what in the hell are idiots like that thinking.

I happened to pull through with minimal permanent damage, but there's no way that I'd recommend riding like that if you've got any other options at all. Brain damage is brain damage, and even if you do pull through and get the privilege of wiping your own butt rather than having to wear a diaper, it still changes you.

I didn't get my brain damage from a crash, I got it from a heat stroke and ridiculously low levels of sodium. But, same basic principle applies. You might get lucky, but the older you are and the worse shape you're in the less likely you'll resemble you afterwards.

P.S, for those that don't know, there's a reason why they call those 1/2 helmets "brains on the half shell."

Earbuds;

I want as much information as i can get while out there on
the road, and sound provides priceless information that i do not want to miss out on...

besides Sad Wings od destiny album has been playing in my head non stop since 8th grade. :)

Stay safe out there!

PS- Sometimes i get off my bike and into my car and just leave my helmet on. lol Odd thing is now when i drive without the helemt i feel so vulnerable, i have been in a car accident and things smashing against my head hurt!
