Key Codes Needed To Make A Copy?

Are the key codes required to make a duplicate key?

I have an original key for my '07 ZX10, but it's a little bent/twisted/old, and is often difficult to pull it out of the ignition switch. I called a dealer in town to have a copy made and he said he needed the key code. Is that actually required if you have a key in hand? I thought they could just make a duplicate of it?

Trying to make a copy of a key that's already causing problems is asking for trouble. There's probably also a dealership rule against them cutting a new key without the code. I'd ask them for the location of the key code, they should be able to tell you. But, I'd check the ignition cylinder first.

Failing that, take the ignition and key to a locksmith and they can probably create a new key for it. I'd call ahead of time and they can give you an indication as to whether they have the blanks and equipment to do it.
