Power Pures/BT-003RS/S20s/Q2s are more than enough for an intermediate pace, and will indeed take you easily into expert. There will be a difference, but you probably won't be fast enough to feel it.

As far as compound, soft is generally a waste for track days. It all depends on track temperature as well.

Good info, guys. Hopefully this saves others from getting tires they don't need or really shouldn't run due to their ignorance of why there are RACE tires and STREET tires.

I've never ran on a track before, but ride on the street/in the mountains quite hard on my 636r. I've been on power pure's the last two seasons, and don't think I will ever go back to anything else.

They have consistently had no chicken strips to speak of since the second week on my first set. The amount of grip, and confidence they provide is amazing.

Lack of chicken strips isn't a sign of a good tire. You can easily get any tire out there, even Shinkos, to the edge of the tire. How much feel and how hard you can push once you get there is what makes the difference.

A fast pace in the mountains wouldn't even get you out of beginner at the track half the time.
