1995 ZX7L.

Some strange stuff is happening with my bike. 1st problem, Sometimes it cranks from the ignition switch. Other times I have to jump the solenoid to crank. Next problem it will only start once or twice, after that the battery is drained. So is it my stator? The brushes, or the r/r?

Here is what I have done to test. Slapped a battery at 13.3 volts in there tonight. Tested it at idle. 12.7dc . Rev to 5k I got 12.91dc.

After tested at idle again 12.5dc, rev to 5k I got 12.83dc. It never spiked past those readings. Tested at idle again, 12.4dc. So ok, now I see that it seems to be trying? But not working. So I pulled the plug from the generator to the harness. Had some trouble as harness side was melted a bit. I thought there were supposed to be 3-4 prongs but there were only 2, is this right? 95 zx7l. Anyway tested continuity, 1 prong reads zero. 1 prong reads 1. something.

So, is the stator bad? Is it the R/R, or is it the brushes considering when I revved it seems to ttry weakly to give my battery some juice.

Please help me out fellas, I have been down for 2 weeks. No ride to work and no money to take to mechanic right now.

im assuming you have a brand new battery your testing with?

voltage is a good way to test but amps are what you want to test...too bad it requires an amp clamp, not a very cheap tool but very valuable to have in your toolbox.

sorry, just stating the obvious...im no stator/oldschool kinda guy and have no idea how to test/diagnose them...which is probly why i cant get my 91 550sx jetski running. all the electrics behind my flywheel look like theyve seen better days, i just havnt learned how to dick with it yet.

The battery is not brand new but the battery is good. It had a fresh charge from the day before. Let the battery sit overnight an it lost .04 volts.

I realize now I tested the wrong plug. Somebody please tell my if I can test the stator and r/r while generator is still attached.

Could be the stator or rectifier if that bike has one, Idk if all bikes do or not My old one did.

I took the cap off the generator and took a peak inside.

I wanted to find the 3 pin stator plug but all I could see is this.
Are the three wires the the ones that lead to the pin? I tested on ohms and get 14.94 on all three.

Those 3 wires are the pins I think. They are just soldered on.

So they all read the same but they are not supposed to read anything am I right?

Also, I see some metal shavings outside the generator, could this be the brushes?

Advice fellas, help!

Regulator was bad. Have a Generator with bad regulator if anybody wants it. LoL. Shoot me a price.
