You may not even need to use the choke. When I had my zzr I hardly ever used it because it didn't need it. It had 18k miles on it, it would start real easy if I was riding it every day. But the back fire thing seemed normal to me.

no used 93 for first maybe couple hundred miles, but after some long reading and research, I decided mid-grade 89 will be harmless and I have been running that for 1500+ miles.

My one experiance with less than 91 octane (87 was all i could get at this one pump in bumville USA) was that the bike seemed to lack power and had a bit of a stumble. The station i bought it from was very busy so i don't think it was bad left over gas or anything like that causing the problem. My friend who was riding an RC51 had no problems however so i figure it was my bike. When i got home i drained that crap out and have never used anything less than 91 or better without a problem.

Some have said that our bikes can use lower octane but i choose to run the factory recommended fuel due to my experiance. Remember that ethanol will slightly lean out your fuel mixture as well since alchohol only has about 85% of the chemical energy of gasoline. I had to richen my fuel mixture on the pilot circuit due to the ethanol in gas these days to get my bike running correctly again. I'll probably end up shimming the needle a bit as well.

haha I like your positive attitude.

I was running 93 because factory recommends 91+ but as far as I Know it takes longer to ingite the fuel in the cylinder the higher the rating, thus ( unless you have an ignition advancer or something) you don't get a full burn leaving behind residue and stuff you dont want in your engine

From my understanding you want to use as low rating as you can that does not cause pinging aka engine knocking.
My bike actually seems to have little more response on lower rating but that could all be in my head.

off subject I know. I will try and run the 93 again see if it helps with the backfiring but from what I have been reading I guess that it is pretty normal for our bikes to do this. And if that is true then I can put up with a few backfires here and there.

Was just making sure I wasn't doing anything wrong.

I felt the same way the first time mine did it. I'm like what the hell? Now why did that happen? So I got to reading on here, & it seems that quite a few of the guys have had it happen. It's not like it happens a lot, Iv had my bike a little over two years & put 26.000 miles on it, & I think its backfired 6 maybe 7 times. & when I think of how many times Iv cranked the bike? Well it just don't seem like a big problem.
