Won't start when warm?

Hi again everyone...

Seems I'm having quite a bit of trouble with the ol' Ninja at present! Recently developed another fault that maybe some of you can offer some help with...

Again, it's a 98 G1 model.

Even on days as cold as this, when I go out to the bike it always fires first time every time from cold with no hesitation whatsoever. The bike also runs ok-ish when out on the road, doesn't cut out or anything like that.

But once you switch off the engine, say for a fuel stop, the bike will not fire. It turn over and over until the battery dies. It will then fire up using jump leads connected to car...I did suspect the battery may be dud but then I can't understand why it starts effortlessly from cold, plus it seems to have bags of charge before it is drained from not starting...

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

when you mean warm, do you mean the fans come on? cause sometimes the battery could be ok. but when you have the fans on before turning, it will drain the battery. i had that problem. the battery was ok. it started up every morning in any weather, but if i rode in traffic and the fans turned on, and then i stopped the bike and try to turn it on while the fans were still on, the bike would not turn over. i got a new battery and it fixed that issue

It doesn't matter how warm, a short journey to the petrol station half a mile away and it wouldn't start after a fill up. At the opposite extreme after a long thrashing ride after the fans came on...same symptoms. I will check the battery as a matter of precaution anyway.

i know you said something about the charging, but im not sure what you meant. did you check the actual charging voltage at the terminals?

sounds like it's running super rich.....does it start without the choke on these cold days??

Yes the choke is on, and usually starts within two or three chugs, I have noticed as well that sometimes the revs stick on and take a moment to come back down again, don't know if the issues are related.

possibly a sticking choke plunger..........OR.......I had a 99 that had a similar issue...the voltage of the battery was good, but the cranking amps were toast, when hot, the amps dropped enough,draggin the voltage down and not letting the ecu/coils get the required amounts.

Is the battery old? getting on in years and in need of replacement?

Is there a way of checking the amps with a multimeter? If not I can always borrow a good battery of one of a friends many bikes to see!

I've only owned the bike since June so I can't comment on the age of it...

not really the amps, but hook up the multi and see how low the voltage drops....starting voltage should be 12.5+V
