Looks as though my head gasket failed. Before I start pulling everything I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I need to remove the entire engine to replace it. I looked over the service manual a few times and it does not mention removing the engine so I'm assuming it's not necessary, but I want to be 100% sure. If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. Thanks
I have not done this, but according to page 4-17 from the factory service manual you do not have to remove the engine from the frame to remove the cylinder head for the 2000 to 2002 ZX-6R or 2005 to 2008 ZZR600, unless they failed to properly explain how to do it.
From the service manual you drain the coolant, remove the cylinder head cover, remove the cam chain tensioner, remove the camshafts, remove the water temperature sensor lead connector, then remove the oil hose banjo bolt. Then the one 6mm and ten 10mm cylinder head bolts are removed, then you take off the cylinder head.
Thank you guys for shedding some light on the situation for me. Many people have been telling me that I'm better off just dropping the engine because it makes everything a lot easier to get to. Would I be better off just going that route?
