600a gas tank help

Hi,

I just got an '87 600a. Gas tank is shot. Got rusty, jagged areas and has a hole or two.
My question is, what can I replace it with? I've seen the $750 OEM part and looked at a few ebay used ones. Ive read about fiberglass fabricating one. haven't seen any ugly, small or even standard size aftermarket tanks. Am I missing a great option? Most part site searches send me to tank pads.
Any easy swaps with other models or years? Got no problem learning a new skill. I just need it to work and be safe. Capacity not a big issue. Not concerned with looks/style.
Thanks

Always bring a towel....and wear a helmet...and eye protection...and safe clothing...and gloves and protective footwear...and have your id...emergency cash...legally required documentation...first aid kit...roadside tool kit...water...And this. And thatís all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair.

You can probably find a used fuel tank for that bike on ebay.

Another option is to get some Evapo-Rust at your local auto parts store. It will eat the rust away almost like magic, leaving the good metal unharmed. Then you can patch any holes with JB Weld.

One mechanic recommended the POR-15 gas tank repair kit, especially for severely damaged tanks with repairs. Here is one web site:

i'm in the same boat with my tank. the only tanks i've seen on ebay lately are $350-250 and like 160, the $160 is really rough.

i missed out on one 2 weeks ago for $80 shipped. uggh!
