Accent painting

What would it take to paint various plastic parts on my '09 250R such as foot controls, brake and clutch lever, et cetera? Obviosuly I would need some paint but would I just need to sand these surfaces down and then paint or put down some sort of primer? What sort of paint would I buy? Automotive paint? Enamel?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I searched top to bottom for a similar thread but couldn't find anything!

Paint will not be durable. You need to powdercoat.
