Markamazing Go to race tech.com and determine what springs you need to buy to suit your riding and weight.

One thing that i found out that helps good was buying a battery tender. As most people know a Bike regardless of size will not charge a battery but only maintain it, especially on the Klx. Get a battery tender and plug it in when ever your not riding. Will make things easier for you and cheaper on your wallet in the long run. When starting kick the bike over a couple times to prime it first then use the electric start to start the bike. This technique saves you energy and your battery life.

Idleing Issues havnt been much of a problem for me Either. The Bike does have a mind of it own at times but all in all is rather reliable. Most of the time i find the reason why most bikes wont idle is because the user messes around with the idle screw or air fuel mixture screws to much and end up making things worst then before. If the Bike isnt running properly there's a reson for it and usually it's from minor mistakes or the simplest things being missed. For instance I had a customer that had bought a 2011 Kx250FI.... ran great! got all sandy and muddy, and now dosnt run worth a crap, came in the dealer ship angry saying the bike was crap and not worth the money he spent. Turns out the bike was fine just all the electrical connections had water in them as he pressure washed everything. Now the Bike Runs like New again. Like I said there is a reason why something dosnt work.

On a different Note I'd Like to hear what upgrades and after market parts people have done with there Bikes and how they perform.

Cheers!
I have had my KLX 450 for several years, I am the second owner. I primarily ride double and single track anywhere from 6k-13K above sea level. I have not had any ( significant ) problems with it at all (starter fuse went once). I keep the valves in spec, change the oil and run 91oct gas. am having some starter issues now, but will mess with that once the season is over ( either starter or relay ). She runs like a champ!

I have installed RT gold valves, Forks and Shock, with custom valving and springs to suit my weight and riding style. OMG ! FMF PB header and power core w/ quiet insert, de smogged ( no real noticeable difference I could discern other than some weight lose ( the bike is heavy to begin with )). Ballistic battery, Ricochet skid plate, Moose rad protecto units, EE handguards.
I have gotten the thing hot, but use the HSB and she fires up!

My FREE advise for everyone is get the factory shop manual and find a good shop to have your work done, nothing worse that being stuck out in the woods without a clue.

KLX450R07 So I'v had my bike when they first came out in 2007. Would like to address some of problems that have been mentioned. pencipa There was one 450R at the LAB2V. Was running well. LAB2V essentially a KTM parade :-)

Here's my story on LAB2V (L.A.-Barstow-Vegas)...

450R personal history & (many) mods...

FWIW... I am the most-published writer of Dirt Bike Adventure stories in America...

http://www.pencikowski.com/TravelsAroundPlayaVista.html

Here's a story I wrote on my 450R... Test: Warp-9 Racing 19" Front Wheel on 450R URL http://www.pencikowski.com/articles/Warp-9.pdf

With this set-up, 450R IMO "best desert bike on the planet" IF YOU CAN KEEP IT RUNNING :-(

Background: I bought one of the first 450R's available (mistake; bike not properly developed or de-bugged). Bike purchased in UT. "Baja kit" added to get street-legal & plated.

Points:

1) Elec system too weak to keep the battery charged (solution = disconnect headlight plug).

2) Any overheat issue solved via Red Line Water Wetter (and I ride in the Mojave)

3) Added full F/R RaceTech suspension $1600 Yes it works. No, not worth the $/effort

4) Re-jetted etc

5) Added Steering damper

The bike NEVER idled properly (stock or jetted; neither did the dealers demo-450R's). Sudco told me the FCR-40 has a Kawa-unique idle circuit, much leaner than "over the counter FCR-40" with *press-fit* idle-circuit jets that cannot be replaced by me.

Bike can really haul-*ass but the lack-of-idle (or 3,000 rpm idle) kills it.

Serious issue (early bikes) is flywheel way-too-light.

I did use the bike in some major-league events...

Death Valley Rally bike test: KLX-450R and KDX-200 Note I used the KDX-200 as 450R "not consistent" in idle/starting. Bummer.

Team Red Line @ Bishop 3-day

Team Red Line @ Sierra Safari 2008

Sierra Safari 2007

Team Red Line on the Moab White Rim Trail

Ideally I'd like to use the bike on the upcoming LAB2V L.A.-Barstow-Vegas. Bike NOT running and won't start. Must be completely taken apart (fuel system & carb) and (whatever it takes) o-hauled. Bummer.

If anybody wants to contact me directly I am Paul P. (age-64, retired) in the Mojave [email protected]

PS>> I have a KDX-200 with every upgrade possible on the bike. AWESOME and stone-reliable. But then again, it's (honest) a $7,000 bike.
