A short list of my top 5 riding destinations that I recently visited on my Er6-n, until discovering better ones!
Let’s start with the five best roads and routes that I was lucky enough to experience alone or with company.
Number five is the Abanian Riviera and the mountains of Northern Epirus – South Albania, an amazing coastal route which gradually turns into an awesome mountain pass through dense forests. After seeing the island of Corfu from the highest point we go back down towards the sea through a unique alpine ribbon style road.
At number 4 the Weinstrasse, the wine roads of southern Austria, a dreamy path from Slovenia towards the hilly and green Styrian landscape on winding roads of amazing quality passing through valleys and small villages! On this occasion I was traveling alone when Lady Luck was generous enough to offer me this gift that immediately became the riding highlight of the whole trip
Number three is a tie between the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy and the a route through Bosnia’s plateaus towards Niksic and the Dalmatian Coast. The magic starts from Montenegro towards Bosnia on a lovely, flowing road with great view towards islets – mountain picks sticking out of lakes which later turn into deep fiords before reaching the Adriatic Sea and its rugged coastline!
The Amalfi Coast is renowned for its Mediterranean beauty with so many movies made there. Pastel colors and a route literally clinging on the Italian cliffs! A snaky, narrow and extremely satisfying road to casually ride on, just beware of the local scooter riders and a couple of super narrow hairpin turns.
Number two is Romania and the infamous Transfagarasan Pass in the Transylvanian Alps, an awesome alpine ribbon unlike any other as it offers a variety of different radius turns and an amazingly rugged, fairy tale like environment. So not only tight hairpins but more of a racetrack on the mountains that can be easily combined with a ride towards the Carpathian Mountains and more great locations interconnected with beautiful routes
And my number one and most exhilarating riding route is the Stelvio Pass through Como and the Swiss Alps. This awesome route can be easily completed in one full day of riding and it is an amazing life experience! It starts at the Italian Lakes and the beautiful town of Como, continues along the east coast of the huge lake towards Bellagio and Mandello del Lario with views to die for and amazing winding road before going uphill towards Switzerland and Saint Moritz through a different but equally beautiful scenery with alpine lakes, dense forests and the steep Oumbrail and Santa Maria passes. After passing through green meadows and villages in deep valleys we start climbing towards Stelvio with an intermediate stop at the point where Swiss, Italian and Austrian borders meet before, at last, reaching the highest point of the huge mountains that we were looking in awe all day! Snow everywhere except for the road, the famous ribbon unfolding in front of our eyes, the amazing alpine scenery but most importantly the shared wonderful feeling between dozens of fellow motorcyclists doing what they love most full and of positive energy turned this route into my absolute best riding experience!
And on to the list of locations which, along with the routes make any road trip complete!
Number five is a tie between Slovenia and Hungary with the picturesque town of Maribor with its river and the outstanding Pecs which exceeded all my expectations. Relatively small and easy to navigate but very beautiful, they are both ideal as stopovers too. Maribor has more natural beauty while Pecs impresses with its architecture and density of different style sights
At number four stands Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. With its massive old city block, castle and bridges it is great for endless walks and photography sessions. The locals are nice and friendly, maybe because itís not yet a major tourist destination. Many hidden corners to discover and a nice feeling in general
