Oil changing problem, please assist

I have a 09 Kawasaki Ninja 650r and I have changed the oil many times before. The manual calls for 2.5 quarts when the engine in completed dry. After adding 2.5 quarts, it has way to much oil. The eye glass is completely full. I did everything the same I do every other time and this is the first time I have had an issue. I will list the steps I took, please let me know what I did wrong.

1. Remove plug, gently rock bike back an forth to make sure as much oil as possible is drained.
2. Reinsert plug
3. Remove filter, gently rock bike back and forth to make sure as much oil as possible is drained.
4. Put on new filter
5. Checked eye glass - could not see any oil in eye glass
6. Fill with 2.5 quarts of new oil

I have done this exact process every-time. I have double checked the manual and am positive it called for 2.5 quarts. Does the engine need to run for a minute to get things circulated and fill the filter? What could I have done wrong?

When you check the oil level, do you check it with the bike straight up and down on level ground, or on the kickstand?

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Run it at idle for a bit so filter is filled, then check sight glass when bike is level, not on stand, after it drains back a few minutes.

I hold it level when looking thru the glass. I let it run for a couple of minutes and it still is above where it needs to be. I guess I will have to take some out which isn't a huge deal, I am just bothered by what I did wrong. I don't want to do it again in the future.

Well you need to run the engine at least until the oil pressure light goes off. Do that, then double check the oil level.

For myself I never measure how much goes in. I carefully add small amounts until I get to the top line of the sight glass. Run the bike until the light goes off, then top back up to the upper line again. Bolt everything up tight and call it a day.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Youre supposed to let is sit for a few minutes after you run it initially, correct?

I ran it for a few minutes last night. let it sit over night. This morning it was still too full. I drained some of the oil out and it is now at the proper level. Next time I will add about 2 quarts rather than the 2.5 the manual calls for. Then if needed I can add a bit more.

When I do oil changes, I go for a ride for few minutes (10 -15 mins approx or more if it's dead in the winter).
  1. After coming back, put the bike upright on rear stand & let it sit for few minutes.
  2. Then open the drain nut & oil intake plug (very carefully as oil is HOT ) and let it drain until there are almost no drops coming out.
  3. Then loosen the oil filter & (again very carefully ) remove it letting it drop into the oil pan below.
  4. Once, ALL oil has been drained, I put in a new oil filter (yes, lube the rubber gasket), close the drain plug and start pouring in the oil.
  5. It takes little more than 2 quarts every time, I only 'eye ball' it on the level bars on the side window.
  6. Close and check everything & start the bike and let it run for couple of minutes (the check oil light goes away almost immediately) & switch off.
  7. Then let the oil "settle" and check it's level, I fill it until it's just a hair above the lower bar on the window.

- adding more oil is a lot easier than removing excess.

The manual provides three different quantities..
an engine overhaul that causes it to dry out completely when it says "when engine is completely dry"

in normal course, it requires 1.9 quarts if you remove filter for oil replacement. and 1.7 if you do not remove filter.
