Question about tank slits

Hey yall, I'm new here, but I wanted to ask a question. On the new Yamaha R1, the tank comes with little slits up by the clip ons, and I was looking at (read: drooling over) Tom Sykes' bike and I noticed them on his as well. They're also on the MotoGP bikes and I don't know the purpose....

Little help?

Me: Black 2008 ZX-6R
Her: Custom Dipped Green Marble 2006 ZX-6R

Future plans: win the lottery, buy all the bikes.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
