Dunlop Q3 experience during 2 track days

Tires are polarizing .......... many people have very strong opinons about various brands or models. Here is some information on Dunlop Q3's.

A set of Dunlop Q3's were mounted to my 2003 ZX-6R (636) in August: 120/70 front and 180/55 rear. I have an aftermarket rear shock, an updated front braking system and everything else should be stock (including the exhaust). Milage is about 15k miles and I have only replaced fluids - no engine work. I weigh about 215 lbs.

I did 2 track days with the tires: the first in August, and the second, 4 weeks later in September. I have not done track days for a few years, and I was not expecting much from myself.

I was advised to run cold pressures of 32 psi front and 31 psi rear on both days. The August day was sunny with an ambient temperature in the 80's. The September day was partly cloudy with an ambient temperature in the 70's. Both days were dry (no rain).

I usually go aggressively on the initial out lap + 3 corners and then consider the tires up to temperature. I never had an issue with traction.

The first track day in August, I was able to run lap times within 4 seconds of what the novice winner's fastest single lap times were that weekend on race day. I was not able to determine what the novice winner's average lap times were, I could only find their fastest lap. The tires could go faster, but I could not. I was the limiting factor during the August track day.

During the second track day in September, I was able to go faster than the previous track day. My best laps were now within one second of the fastest single lap times that the Novice winners did that weekend. Not bad for a street tire.

Unfortunately, I am done for the year, but I would do another track day on them if there was one available this year. The attached image is the bike in the pits during the September track day.

I would rate my experience with these Dunlop Q3's as very positive.

Thanks for the write up, good job and I enjoyed it.

Was the tire pressure hot after lap setting or cold before the start?

I think I may give these a try next set on my 14R?

Great review! LOVE my Q3's! Done maybe 2-3000KM on them so far; twisties last weekend and they performed amazingly. No track days yet though. They warm up very quicly and best of all they don't square out at all compared to other tires!

32F and 31R were cold pressures and I have updated my notes.

I have only used the Q3's for the two track days mentioned and not for street riding. Glad you have had a good experience with them. As I mentioned, tires are very polarizing so I thought that it might be helpful to report lap time information vs. just my opinions.

I liked my Q3s, but at the end of a season of doing trackdays I did find they were starting to give way. The tires do tell you when the tire is worn out, they don't just drop you in the corner. The tires had enough tread for 1 more trackday, but they had to many heat cycles in them. I did have guys tell me though, "that I was probably reaching the limits of the tires capability", so that could have been it as well. All around a good tire for trackdays, for the novice and entering the intermediate groups.
