Hi all
Just got myself a 03 Z1000 15,800 miles...took one look at this bike and did not need to test drive it...
But after trucking it home, next day was the run out...first run out i did not notice anything...few days later out again...6th gear whine around 50mph...of throttle ok..back on again huge whine...getting to 60/70mph i can hear it, but not as bad, so its the 6th gear meshing..searched the internet and found that the dealers said its ok no problem. I found that the dealer changed the 6th gears in 2005, or sooner..read below.

Howdy,
I have been riding for a few years, and my bike of choice is the ZX6E/ZZR600. In fact I use one as a commuter. I am new to this forum though I have been a major contributor to zx6e.net.

A few days ago, I purchased a 2003 Z1000 with 35K on it. I was a little hesitant, but the price was pretty good, and they were all commuting miles. I plan to ride the Z1000 for weekend fun.

After my initial euphoria of a liter bike wore off, I discovered a very noisy 6th gear. Only under load is there a gear meshing sound. 5th gear on down are very quiet. Seeking information from this forum, I learned that others experienced the same problem, being told that "Kawasaki says thats normal".

Well, I got curious and did a little research. I found that Kawasaki did a part change for the input and output 6th gears. Take a look at these snippets of transmission gear parts lists:

2003, 2004 Z1000

13262C GEAR,INPUT 5TH,20T 13262-0062
13262D GEAR,INPUT TOP,21T 13262-0074
13262E GEAR,OUTPUT TOP,23T 13262-0076
13262F GEAR,OUTPUT 4TH,28T (ZRT00AE001736 - ) 13262-0077
92022 WASHER,25.3X33X1.0 92022-1109

2005 Z1000

13262C GEAR,INPUT 5TH,20T 13262-0062
13262F GEAR,OUTPUT 4TH,28T (ZRT00AE001736 - ) 13262-0077
13262G GEAR,INPUT TOP,21T 13262-0228
13262H GEAR,OUTPUT TOP,23T 13262-0229
92022 WASHER,25.3X33X1.0 92022-1109

Parts 13262D and 13262E were replaced with 13262G and 13262H. No other components in the parts list were updated. In 2006, the parts were re-labeled 13262D and 13262E, but had the newer, true part numbers; 13262-0228 and 13262-0229 respectively.

So Kawasaki might have said that the whine comming from 6th gear was normal, but they sought to do something about it. Also, in a 2005 Z1000 press release, Kawasaki states: "Crowning added to gears improves durability"

This begs the question for both 2003-2004, and 2005-2006 Z1000 owners; Does your 6th gear whine? If you wish to respond, just state the year, mileage, and if 6th gear is noticeably louder, whinyer, or noisier than 5th. You will probably need to be going about 50-55 to hear the whine clearly.

Thanks. I'll go first.

Found out lots of 03 owners have this problem, could be the straight cut gears, i got a letter back from Kawasaki they said they did not know anything about the sixth gear whine..yeah right... i will keep the speed above 55 before changing into 6th..

I did, it seems you need to go back and read your post. Just trying to help answer your own question. But if you'd rather gripe, I'm done trying to add any input.

My 03 with 11.6k doesn't whine and I have had it for 1.6k miles. And I don't ride slow. I also don't use 6th at 50. I'm still in 4th then.

Did some research and it looks like its the cut of the gears, seen the pictures of the stock 5th and new 5th grear..some people call it harmonic whine..not doing anything about it..hope its not a selling problem when that day comes.
