I just bought a Y2K ZX6R for 3000. the guy that I bought it from gave me some bunk info about some things on it, and over the last couple of day's ive been noticing missing bolts over half the bike. I had to replace my chain and sprockets, which were supposedly new but had broken teeth, and could be used as ninja stars and am just genrally becoming concerned with some other little odds and ins about the bike.

first question I'd like to pose is how does that price sound to you? I havn't owned a bike in about 5 years, so I'm playing catch up.

Second question is what things should I be looking for to go wrong? The guy that I bought it from said he rebuilt the top and bottom end of the bike, then again theres teeth from my old sprocket probally in someones windshild right now. The bikes never been laied over thats pretty obvious, no scratches on the body work, and none on even the pegs or handle bars, just alittle rub on the front faring when he had it off.

It depends on miles / condition etc. $3k for J1 is a good deal IMHO. From what I’ve seen it’s even a bit low. That is for a bike with clean title and all parts in good condition. I have J1 myself and it's a great bike. I still have warranty, so that adds to the value.
Not sure what bolts are missing... [?] but that does not sound good. I would take bodywork off, strip it down as much as I can and go over everything. Also change oil and oil filter, good idea on a "new" used bike. Did you get any service papers with the bike?

I'd say it depends on the condition of the bike and title. I recently paid $4100 for my mint stock, clean titled '00 ZX6R which I thought was a really good price. I'm not sure what you mean by rebuilt the top and bottom end of the bike. Are you saying he rebuilt the engine from the ground up? Anyhow, at $3000 I would expect a few things to be wrong with the bike. I'd do as Nexus suggested and strip down the bike and go over everything with a fine tooth comb. If you haven't gotten a service manual yet, get one immediately. Good luck and keep up posted!

I just purchased a Y2K ZX6R last wkend from a local guy off ebay for 4200 and I think I got a great deal.I agree with Nexus and Toaster. I changed my oil last night (mobil synthetic) and did some other wk. I have a 01 CBR 929RR and I'm asking 7500 but will settle for 7k. I think I could at least get 6k+ for the Ninja. Bikes are a hot commodity, esp here in the South (Dallas/Fw). You can't get a 92 and newer for 3k unless its a Katana (Can of Tuna) or a 500 CC Ninja. I think 3k is good regardless. I have a guy in Austin customizing a 89 FZR for me and he's asking 2800. You got a deal. Get a manual and if you find one please let me know. I'm looking for one

Toaster that red sparkles man. All my life I have disliked the color red but now I have a change of heart[ I love that Firecracker red. I need to find a manual off ebay. You can print it off www.kawasaki.com web but just don't have the time or patience. I'll rather be riding that printing [8D]

Thanks for the input guy's, I've been riding all day and my hands are numb so bear with me.

Ok whats missing on the bike,
rear grab handles,
all 4 turn signals,
the clip inside the main seat that holds it down,
and the baffles inside the can.
I dont think its been jetted because i get some pops when i downshift.
so far thats about all I can find, I went over it last night when I was in the shop where I was getting my new chain/sprocket set, and just started noticing missing bolts, thankfully the guy's there let me dig through their parts bin, and replace the ones that wern't there. only problem is there kinda mixed matched heads now[V]

anywyas, when I said the guy rebuilt the top and bottom end, just that he put new rings in it and rebuilt the carbs, and replaced the clutch. the guy's at AF1 racing confermed that he actually did some of the work in the shop, so I know he did some of it, Other than that the bike's been running like a dream.

Im still trying to find a manual for it, seem's hayes dosn't make one, cause its too new, so Im probally going to have to buy a Kawai one, but no biggie,

one more question about the bike fore I go to work, the line comming off the back of the fuel tank, after running between 70 and 110 for about 4 hrs today, is there any reason fluid should be comming out of that down by the kick stand? once again I bow to your wisdom and knowledge and appreciate your help

No offense but it sounds to me like you will be putting some serious money into this bike.

My advice, have the Kawi shop go through this from top to bottom and give you an estimate for how much it will be to bring it back to spec. It may be you got a bargain and it may be you want to sell it fast.

For a two yr old bike to need major engine work suggests that the guy who owned it beat the hell out of it or did not maintain it or both.

Check it out before it becomes a black hole.

check and see if the bronze(brass?) caps on the bottom of the carbs has been removed. if not, remove them carefully and depending on your elevation adjust each one a full turn ccw. this should aleviate the popping. as far as the deal you got, i think its awesome, the guy probably ran the fuck out of it but if he put new rings in he may have bored it over slighlty so you actually have a faster than stock bike now. i got an 02 with 2750 miles and 5 year warranty for 3000. i put 1000 into it and its just about finished, only thing is a couple of scratches on the left faring and left tail.

What is the fluid by your kickstand? I know the gas tank vent hose runs down by the kickstand and ive had on occation some gas come out when it was hot out and had my tank filled right up, never more than a couple drops though...

Give Kawa dealer a shot, but most of the time they charge way way too much. Shop labor is not cheap, and then parts... In the end you will still have to get parts from them, but save some $ on labor. Or you could go to e-bay, however that’s likely to take longer, track everything down etc.
You should be able to do it without the dealer, get prints from Kawa website, get service manual, that should do it.
BTW this is better done with 2 people, 2 heads better than one.

P.S. the hell with Kawa spec, I would go with some trick aftermarket parts whenever possible. Most of the time (like 99%) aftermarket will run you less than special order from Kawa.

The bike already is starting to turn into a black hole, but honestly what toy worth owning isnt [] so far the bikes been running great, the dealership that took a look at it for me said mechanically its in great shape, just a few odds and ends that arnt there. compression tests on the engine were like it was new, all the fluids have been changed within the last 2 weeks, and everything is running at or better than stock.
the tuner shop that I've been going to to actually have the work done and get my parts from laughed about some of the stuff on it, more about taking my old sprockets and chucking them at the guy's house that I bought it from. other than that they said the bike was in great shape. Im waiting to get it dynoed untill I get my new exhaust and jet kit, probally have to wait till taxes come back.
As for the drops on the ground, ya thats what I figgured it was, only problem now is my brand new metz back tire has a slow leak in it somehow talk about a pain

I don't know.

Some people just don't know what bikes are worth. I got my 1998 Ninja in Feb. 02 and paid $1500 for it. It has been jetted, has a muzzy pipe, had michelin pilot sports (worn), and made some noise (which I found is the cam chain). I need to put in a new tensioner, which costs $50, but other than that I got a hell-of-a-deal.

Also, since it has been jetted it is very tempermental. Floods easily, but since I learned to replace the plugs, it's about a 30 minute fix and costs $2 max to have the old plugs clean.

I hope you got the same deal I did. I'm selling mine this year, asking $4750 (expecting to get a bit less), 10K miles, grn/prple, awesome bike, never raced. Minor scratches on fairing, but what a rocket!
