My chain clearly needs adjusted and I would like to do it before I break something. I don't have stands... How do I do it without stands? It's an 06 ZX-10R.

you don't even need to lift the rear, just pull the cotter pin, loosen the axle bolt(no need to remove) and adjust away

Did the owners manual leave out the part on chain adjustments ? You might look there . Some bikes have a sticker on the swingarm about the adjustment .
