I'm starting to wonder if my bike is going to be a "money pit". It's a 1998 with 17000 km on it.

I changed the cam chain already. Cleaned the carbs. Resync. the valves...

This weekend I put 300 km on my bike. More than 1/2 way home I noticed oil all over my rear wheel(thank God I stopped for a coffee and noticed)! When I'm riding my b/f said the oil "window" was full. There is something very wrong.

I'm hoping I didn't blow a gasket or something ..what I am wondering is if this model/year bike is a lemon. Since it was redesigned in 1998; maybe they rebuilt it to be a (for lack of a better word) piece of crap.

Has anyone else had problems with their 1998. Problems that you wouldn't normally see until the bike is alot older?

I'm going to take it to the shop tonight and have the oil dropped (see if there is coolant mixed in with the oil?)

Or...maybe the previous owner (1) just rode the sh%$ out of this bike. Who knows?

It sounds like case was overfilled with oil. What happens then is excess oil is blown out. From where? On this bike I don't know. Check your air filter, it may be extra oily and need replacement/cleaning. Sometimes extra oil blows back into the airbox and then drains out from there.
When filling/checking the oil. do it with the bike straight up and down. I usually do it with someone holding it.

There's a high/low level mark on the oil sight about 1/4 from the bottom and 1/4 from the top. Shouldn't be full. Look at the manual if you've got one.

Only probs for me is the CCT. 25k and nothing else so far. Doesnt ride sloppy either, or like it has a lot of miles on it. Still runs and rides great.

My problem was the rubber seal in the oil line fitting was leaking badly due to overheating (probably)

No so bad.
