Hey guys. I bought my new 2002 636 about 3 months ago and so far it has been great apart from a couple of "noises" that have me a bit concerned. First off, sometimes when I start the bike when it has not been ridden for 2 or 3 days, there is a massively loud crack noise (like a firecracker) that seems to come out the exhaust just as the engine kicks over. is this normal or has anyone else experienced this? Also the motor has become progressively noisier since new (now 1100kms on the odometer) there is lots of clicking noise coming from the front end/or motor that gets faster with bike speed 9not engine rpms) Any ideas? what should I tell the dealer when I go for my first service? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks. Sade riding.

hello, I've got the same bike(450kms), and I also got the clicking noise that comes from the front of the engine. But I dont have anything like a firecraker in my engine, and sometimes the bike isn't used for a week. I have no idea what it could be, but I think that te clicking noise is the noise of your valves. But I'm not sure.

I have a 01 and I get that same back fire every once and a while I asked the dealer he said that it is ok it's because the motor has such high compression. Not to worry about it.

i have a 2002 ZX6r and sometimes when starting after seating for a while I get that loud ass firecracker out the exhaust. My bike runs fine and the service mech said not to worry.

I get it too and have found that if I turn the fuel knob to "off" when I park the bike, it doesn't happen anymore. But remember to turn the knob back on when starting. I flick my kill switch on as a reminder.

The backfiring is just one of the little nuances associated with Ninjas. It's usually a result of unburned fuel in the system, especially if it's just been revved before you switch it off. That's why it doesn't backfire when the fuel tap's switched off.

my 2002 ZX-636R has now 1700 kms on it, and it has the exact same symptoms you describe. I was also a little concerned, but given the answers of the other guys in the board, I guess it's normal...

This engine is damn loud, that's for sure... millions of clicking and stuff...

Exactly.....


And I wouldn't worry about that clicking noise unless it is really loud. Kawasaki engines seem to be very loud and noisy compared to the other manufacturers. When you mention the loud engine and nosies, most mechanics will just say "It's a Kawasaki"....

Mine 02 zx-6r has a slight clicking sound too, but it is very faint and I can't hear it when I'm riding the bike, only when the bike is idling...

Dont worry guys, my 02 has the same backfire sometimes and the clicking noise of the valves is normal for Kwaks

I love my occasional backfire. It scares the shit out of the noisy bird that lives across the street. Worth its weight in gold if you ask me.

Backfiring is cool, but... I store my bike in a garage, inside my building... so, the corridor that gives access to all the individual garages is a garage itself. Guess what... I almost get deft with the ressonance, when that happens [xx(]

personally i adore my 2002 636 and i wouldn't swap it for a 2003 if given the chance. It's more comfortable, more suitable to take my girl as a pillion and has a nicer shape than the 2003 636. I sat on a 03 at the dealer and they are just too small. I'll take my 2002 636 anyday, thanks...

I'd goto an 03 if it would not cost me anything, but I'm not gonna spend any more money until the 10R comes out in 04, I'll probobly move to that in 05.

the back fire you are all talking about is caused by twisting the throttle when you are parking your bike up for the night.when you have twisted the throttle with the engine off,some fuel has gone into the engine and hasn't been burnt off,so when you start up in the morning this fuel gets sent into the exhaust and is then ignited,this is was cuases the backfire,wakes all the neighbours and scares the shit out off you.lol
don't twist the throttle when putting the back away with the ignition off.
it will f**k up your catalytic convertor eventually.

the light clicking you can hear is the reed valves doing their job.

To cure that "back-fire" problem i start my 2001 gixxer without givving it throttle at first because it wont usually start like that, then finish the job with a crack of the throttle! this seems to work for me!

Here's what I noticed re my 02 and backfiring (this was with a Yosh RS-3 w/o a jet kit). This is on cold starts, as in first start of the day. I'd open the choke fully, and if I waited a few secords or so, when I hit the starter I'd get a big ripper out of it. But if I open the choke and hit the starter right away, I wouldn't get a backfire at all.
