I posted this in the newbie section and after some thought, I figures I would get mostly newbie answers so I am re-posting here... Sorry. O.K. now, this break in period listed in the book AND on the bike is driving me insane! 4000RPM for 500 MILES?!?!? and 6000RPM for the next 500 MILES?!?!? :( My silver 03' 636 ROCKET WANTS TO GO!!!! and lord knows I want to give her hell, but I've been good so far, 160 miles on the clock and she's only been to 5000RPM a couple of times. How important is the break-in for a Kawa? Do I really have to lollygag around for 1000Mi. before I light up the afterburners and give the local Sheriff a reason to live?
Please help, I think I'm going insane [)]

Ride it easy for 500 miles, I keep it under 10,000rpm. Change the oil, then ride it.

It's been talked about a bunch of times, and it all depends on your point of view. Do you want max power and short life, or less then max power and a long life? I kinda took the middle road. Took it easy(no more then 6-7k) for about 300 miles. After that I just rode it. I currently have 4k miles on it and no problems what so ever. I changed the oil/filter at 100 miles, oil at 300/1000, and put synth oil and new filter in at 2000. It may not have needed to change the oil so much but coming from the hot rod world I'm kinda anal about new engines and oil changes. What ever you do DO NOT use synth oil till about 2000-3000 miles, it will end any and all break in that is happening.

You don't have to be faster then the bear, just faster then your friend.
Check out this thread... it's no doubt one of the most referred to threads ever. Lots of good input on break in procedures and recommendations.

Hey Nemesis, congrats on the new whip. I just broke 1000mi but I couldn't wait much after about 400mi. I started riding her pretty hard. I too just had to unleash the beast and I must say damn is it a great bike. @4,000 rpm you can only do like 50mph in top gear, i live where you've pretty much gotta get on the freeway and limit is 75 so I was dying out there. Definately change the oil. ANd I agree about the synthetic I ran a blend for the first change at about 650 mi into the break in. So far so good. Enjoy, it's worth a little wait:D
