Had 120 mj and 55 pilot, changed main jet to 148 since stock is 140, now it barely will do 80mph and pops at high rpm, but with smaller 120 it did fine up top

It is best to buy a jet kit made for your bike, from a company such as Ivans, Factory Pro or Dynojet- they have experimented with different jets for the most common intakes and exhausts and will tell you what will probably work the best, or at least be very close if you have no other problems to complicate it.

Below is an article with the basics for carb tuning:

Put 120 back in now at 80 u can roll throttle right on up, i done some homework and my 120 was mikuni and tge 148 was keihin, i think it was too big a step, but everyone says 148 mj 50 pilot works well, mine seems like 120, only reason i fooled with it was a blip in throttle sittin at a light

Sitting at the light is an idle jet, not the mainjet. Main jet size isn't really important until you get above 3/4 throttle opening.

Also, what bike?
