How much lighter is an aftermarket 520 chain compared to the stock one? Is it significant enough to want one? I just was considering one since the stock one seems to rust very easily in Hawaii. Yes, I lube it frequently.
I recently did a 520 converson using a DID 520VM chain, Renthal ultra lite front sprocket and Sprocket Specialist hard anodized aluminum rear sprocket. The total weight saving over stock was 2lbs 2ozs. Most of the savings was from the rear sprocket. I think the difference in chain weight was about 8 ozs. I don't know why a 520 chain would be any less susceptable to rust.
Only the side plates are "gold" plated. They probably won't rust as bad but the rest of the chain is about the same. You can also get them in colors including green. The '04 ZX-6RR is supposed to come with a green 520 chain.
