Be warned all nYc riders....

NYC cops are now towing bikes that are parked on the sidewalks, no more tickets, They are calling flatbed trucks in and towing them away. They are checking plates, registration and inspections and giving tickets on anything that is out of order. They are also ticketing bikes that are sharing meters with cars.

I caught a cop (beat walker) bending my plate back today, he then said he was going to write me up a ticket for no inspection... I told him to look harder and you'll see my Valid Sticker, he then said its in the wrong place - BS they just don't know what the hell they are doing.

Long story short, instead of taking the nasty route I took the friendly way, flashed me DEA card and chatted with him. He told me about the crack down. Bike accidents are way up this year and there are a lot more bikes on the road these days and they think laws do not apply to them. So I guess the invisible mayor is trying to make more money so he can hire his cousins to do nothing

Hey Localbar... how is it like riding in the big city? Do you take the bike out in the country on the weekends? Just wondering, I've been a country hick most my life and its not to bad here in Ohio with small roads/hills, actually can get the bike over 100 mph for some distance.

I guess you get used to city riding but it sucks. The problem is getting in your car. There is so much traffic in NYC and on a bike you can always find a hole to sneak by, with a car you cannot. That when you get road rage becuase you knew if you were on your bike you can get by.

Weekends I used to take trips to places but these days I don't have much time for weekend riding. I am working on the house which seems like its going to be a weekend summer project this year.

Thanks for the tip Localbar...although I'm curious what they'd do if your bike was chained down...boot it?

As far as riding in NYC, I think your far too generous. When I'm riding in Manhattan, I feel like I have a giant bullseye painted on my back and every lunatic driver and taxi is aiming right for it! Not to mention all the potholes, etc. I'll admit, it is nice slipping between cars...cuts cross-town travel by more than half easy

Last night the strangest thing happened to me. I went for a quick ride to Kinkos (with sally's 250 since mine is in the shop) as I walked out of Kinkos and mounted the bike a Cop came out of nowhere and told me to cut off the bike and asked for my papers.

Turns out I knew the cop from back in the days, he gave me a heads up. He pointed to a flat bed truck (Jamaica Tow Company) which had over 10 bikes loaded on it followed by a regular NYPD tow Truck. He is on Motorcycle Control Detail, that means:

If they happen to see your bike parked they will wait until you mount your bike and ask for your papers (shows intent to ride away) if your papers are not clean or you do not have a motorcycle license they will impound your bike.

There are especially passing by known spots where motorcyclists hang out. But if they see a bunch of bikes parked somewhere the truck will wait a block away and the officer(s) will wait around the bikes and approach you when you mount your bike.

They are also towing bikes that are parked on the side walk.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. If you don't have your license or clean papers the risk is becoming to great, before they didn't care obviously they do now.

i gotta put up with that crap here to. maybe not as extreme but they're pretty bitchy around here. (tallahassee, home of FSU). also there has been a rash of stupidity lately with the local motorcyclist that end up in wrecks/deaths.

the crap we have to put up with when we ride a bike.

It's mainly due to all the deaths this year, if you look it up NYC / LI is averaging 1 a week in motorcycle related accidents. Accidents involving motorcyclists are up from last year too. A good number of those cases the rider was not licensed to ride a motorcycle. So they are trying to prevent further accidents / deaths

Also NYC is at an all time high on stolen bikes this year, they are now following riders home and stealing them from their garages. I really don't care since me and sally are legit, its good to know they are doing something about it. Insurance is out of control here for bikes, I pay more for my bike then I do for my car, thats just silly.

Another part of me thinks NYC is doing it to collect needed money, Bloomberg is doing everything he can to get money, Just the other day I got a fine for not properly lining up the trash (WTF) NYC is going to hell, time to move out east LI Long Beach =)
