At cold start-up, I get a slight dimming of the tach/speedo and headlights when my idle is weak. As soon as the idle goes above 1000rpm and on to it's set point at 1200, the dimming is gone.

Is this only because the alt. isn't spinning fast enough at the cold weak idle? My Cobra does the same thing with it's underdrive pulleys due to the alt not being spun fast enough at low idle speed.

Do any of you see this same thing or is this a stator issue?

Yeah thats normal. its just the alternator in most bikes ar ejust not strong enough. When I switched to integrated turn signal in the rear,everytime I turn on the indicators my tach dims and brightens in cue with the indicator.

Really just f*ck it. If ya have to look down to see ya speed or rpm then ya not one with the machine<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

i have a 2001 and its the same here. problem is only when i start it cold. seems like to get that sum b*tch started always requires some kind of "come on baby, dont die on me" tought to run across our minds. kind of like when we close the choke.

But... Some other guys have said it could be the stator, rectifier or voltage reg on our bikes. If the alt is weak, can we get an after market one that is better?

I haven't actually seen an upgraded aftermarket alternator for our bikes, but you may be able to get it rewound for higher output. Is there a different output for the ZX9R or 12R alternators? One of those might work.

Mine never dims. Starting it this morning at about 35F and idle at 800.

I tested it with the engine off but the key in the on position. When I hit the brakes, the lights dim. This leads me to think the battery is a little weak or it's normal??? As soon as I get my percent of charge tester, I will fully charge the battery to see what happens.
