everytime I've had to lay on the brakes HARD to a stop (mostly to avoid blind cagers), I pull in the clutch and grab brake, front & rear. I get a repeating, clunking noise from the rear -- almost sounds like it's chain or engine related. Happens before (if) the rear locks up. I've never heard the noise otherwise. Is this normal??

Without seeing or hearing the problem myself I can only add some suggestions.

Check the chain and spockets.
Check your rear brake pads and caliper bolts.
Check your shock and linkages.

The first thing would be to make sure everything is tight and aligned properly. After that without hearing it it will be hard to diagnose. Hopefully it will be one of the items that is mentioned above and you'll be done.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

sounds like the chain is skipping some teeth on the sprocket. either that or the chain needs to be tightened.

I used to get that all the time right before the tire would lock up. Its from poor traction, its just the rear shaking and making the chattering noise. Once I got rid of dunlop's I really never had it again.

Yep same problem on my 99. Changed to a better tire and no more. It's just the chain smacking around from the tire skipping.
