I used to not like the idea of "imparing one of your senses" when riding a bike, but since I started using Skull Candy ear buds and listening to music on long rides, I actually hate riding without them. The wind noise is just annoying as fuck, so really drowning that out helps for a much more enjoyable ride, especially on long commutes like I do (125 miles a day). My head and eyes are always on the move looking for hazards, so my hearing doesn't play a big factor. The only issue is when you're listening to music at rest and someone is trying to talk to you. LOL. That's about it.

I used to use earplugs before i put a dbkiller in my pipe... 8 bucks for ear plugs? seems a little pricey for a fancy case... although its pretty cool lookin... :)

those memory foam ear plugs work great... Use them when I go to the gun range... conforms to the ear canal well, and is necessary if you got a loud pipe... after 10 - 15 minutes of enduring a loud pipe you run the risk of permanent hearing loss... So get whatever plug you like and protect your hearing ASAP.

I don't wear plugs around town, but on longer rides I do. I just grab pairs from work and use them. They're rated at a 33dB cut in noise and i have no problems while riding with them. Definitely saves me from headaches as I've forgotten them a few times and ended up with a headache.

8 bucks seems a bit steep for a little plastic case and the same earplugs you can pick up at Walmart for a few bucks to me. If the convenience of the case is worth it to you, then go for it. Like I said, mine are free, so I don't sweat it if i lose a pair. I usually keep 4 or 5 pairs in my tank bag just in case.

I got a pair custom-moulded musicians' earplugs, free of charge because my missus is an audiologist. Cuts down the wind noise but I can still hear the pipe and the traffic somewhat.

For long rides, or when I need to use my phone's GPS, I use a pair of IEM-type earphones with the music turned low.

Ive been using these for a few years now:

DIY Earplugs - Silicone earplugs that are moulded to your own ears for a perfect fit ....

Comfortable and cheap... used to use disposables but will never go back now... I bought a second kit and moulded them round a set of earphones as I like to ride with music...I keep it at a level where I can still hear other sounds but it seems to relax me and improve my riding... moulding it round the earphones makes them more comfortable to wear as I used to find that the helmet padding would push the earphones at weird angles

I used to use cheapo earplugs for quite a bit but started using Hearos. You should be able to pick them up at any pharmacy for $8 (10 pairs in a box with a carrying case). Definitely cuts down on the noise and makes the ride far more enjoyable. You can still hear the pipe and the rest of traffic but at much lower volumes. They're also washable so you can reuse them.

If I am going to be at or above 65 mph for anything over 45 minutes or so, I will wear earplugs. Earplugs, in my opinion, serve many uses. The reduction of wind noise stops headaches, delays the onset of fatigue, and "slows" things down around you.

Before I started wearing earplugs, I would be EXHAUSTED if I had to ride on the highway for a couple hours and now it is no big deal. Also, the reduction in wind noise does really slow things down. If I am not wearing earplugs and doing about 85-90 mph, I am VERY aware of the fact that I am riding fast. With earplugs, it feels nice and relaxed at those speeds.

I ride in earplugs now all the time. For the price of these cheap ear plugs, it isn't worth skipping them and risking my hearing later. I can still hear sirens and car horns just fine, but it greatly reduces the wind noise, which is what really needs to stop.

I found some info about riding with earplugs as well. (There are also several threads about riding with headphones in which people chime in about ear plugs as well)...
