Is getting a full system really worth $1k? does it really give that much power? is it overkill for street riding?

Depends, if you don't have the cash to spare then no. I mainly looked at full systems because some slipons/bolts required hacking the mid pipe and I didn't want to do that in case I wanted to put stock back on. Depends on the brand you I got a full Muzzy/Polished Stainless system with Ivan's jet kit for $700 from Ivan himself.
