Is there a reserve tank on the 2009 ninja 250

So i went for a ride last night on my 2009 250 ninja and i was on my way to the gas station i knew that i had low fuel but i could make it no problem. Of course i ran into some construction so i had to detour around it i was about 2 blocks away from the gas station at a red light and my bike died :(. I was scared of leaving it on the side of the road because some dumb ass would probly run right into it, so i had to push it the last 2 blocks. I looked for a reserve switch and couldnt find one i found the fuel tap but if i am correct this is used only when u want to drain ur tank. Just wonder if there is a reserve tank on these bikes and if so where the hell is the switch.

Thanks you very much Ichiro i was pretty confused with mikes reply as i went and looked at my bike afterwards. I was just making sure i wasnt going crazy and didnt want to start ripping my bike appart to find out for myself sorry if this has been posted befor, new to the fourm

Cleaned this thread :rolleyes:. To fully clarify what Ichiro is saying (and probably explained in the PM he sent to the OP) for future readers:

The pre '08 EX250's HAD a reserve setting on the petcock. As with a lot of motorcycles this isn't a separate tank, but a different pick-up point on the fuel drain:

So when you are on the "on" position if you run out of fuel it is more of a reminder that you need to get fuel and by putting it on "reserve" you are picking up fuel from the lowest point in the tank so when you run out of fuel you are REALLY out.

The '08+ 250r's did away with this (likely because Kawi thinks the fuel gauge suffices for determining how much fuel is in the tank even though the gauges are wildly inaccurate) and the petcock has no reserve function anymore. The pickup is the lowest point of the tank so once your tank is dry: It's DRY. The settings now are either "ON" or "PRI". The difference is that "ON" is vacuum operated. So long as the engine is running the petcock is open. Once the engine turns off and vacuum is removed the petcock closes automagically. There is no need for an off setting. The "PRI" setting simply bypasses the vacuum operation and forces the petcock open even if the engine isn't running. This is helpful if the bike has sat for a long time and all the fuel has evaporated from the fuel bowls to allow fresh fuel to make it down there instead of having to let the engine crank to refill the bowls. That last sentence was a run-on sentence I'm afraid.

Hey guys, i own a 2010 Ninja 250 the Tribal red/black edition. I was wondering if someone could help me locate where the switch is to turn on my reserve tank. I cant find it, so a detailed description or picture/video would be GREATLY appreciated!

Its located on the left top corner of your tank. You have to remove your side black trim to locate it.

What is it for and how is it used?

Hmm. Well on my ZZR it's on the left side under the rider's seat. It's called a fuel petcock. It should say "ON--OFF--RES".

It is pretty obvious when you see it, but it's possible that yours is missing or maybe the white lettering is gone.

You gotta remove a plastic panel to get to it? That sucks. I usually have to reach up under my ass while going down the interstate to flip it over when the tank level gets low.

The petcock moves a tube from a "high" suction to a "low" suction inside the tank. The reserve should leave you with about a gallon of fuel till you're f'd (mine is 0.9 gallons).

Are you sure you have a reserve tank? My '09 250r doesn't. That's why it has a fuel gauge. You might wanna have a closer look at your owners manual ;)

Not sure what you saw, Emil, but I am certain my bike has no reserve tank or petcock. (I wish it did have a petcock - it would make it easier to drain the carbs in the winter.) The 2007 and earlier 250rs did have them IICR but ours do not, hence the fuel gauge. Also, the reserve switch should be easy to get to so that, like on Larry's bike, you can switch to reserve as soon as your main tank runs dry, without even having to stop moving.

I would look in my owners manual, but the dam dealership didnt give me one and ive been waiting for them to deliver it to me asap..

No. There are TWO settings on the '08+. ON and PRI.

There is no "off" because if there isn't vacuum present (say when the engine is off) the fuel valve automagically shuts unless it is on PRI.

Edit: I merged this thread with another thread (which was from less than a month ago) because it's asking THE EXACT SAME QUESTION!

Please search before aimlessly creating new threads.
