ok this month im going to buy a 1996 zx6r with 14300 miles for 3500 i assumed that was a pretty good price...

the only kicker is this will be my first street bike.. ive been riding offroad for around a year on a cr250... i have riden a 1998 yamaha yzf 600 once and ive wanted a sportbike ever since...

so is this a bad or good idea?

oh yeah..
what is the 0-60 time?

That's about the right price I figure...

It's probably an ok first street bike if you have some off-road experience, just remember that it's only as dangerous as you make it... might wanna go easy for the first little while... lots of people make 600 supersports their first bike... lotsa people crash too... as always I recommend a track day or a track school once you start getting up to speed.

0-60 time should be around 3 seconds, quarter mile VERY low 11's; that year zx6r was a rocket for that time and won most shootouts. The engine from that bike wasn't really changed much all the way to the 2000 model.

I'd say that a '96 ZX6R with 14000+ miles on it for 3500 sounds a little high. Unless that bike is in mint condition and has been taken care of very well. Most supersport bikes with 14000 miles on it have been down or wrecked.

My advice would be to shop around for a bit. I've seen an 02 ZX6R on ebay going up for 3900 bucks and only had 700 miles on it.

As far as going from cr250 to a 600 supersport, I think you'll be fine. Since you are worried about it before you actually do it says something about you and your carefullness, but I guess your name acid trip does to... ? =)

I believe the 0-60mph time for a 02 zx6r is 3.2 or something around there. Not sure what a 96 would be and whatever it was would not be accurate to what you are getting because when they run those tests...its on a new engine/bike. No telling what a 96 with mods, wear and tear, ect...would run a 0-60 test.

sounds too high. Street bike value decreases at a much faster rate. Kawai's depreciate more than most. I have seen 00 to 02's for about the same price used. Don't let him give you crap about mods because all that means is he beat on it. Never pay more for mods.. if possible buy a completely stock bike.. maybe a slip on.. that way you know what the bike has been through

Man, psyclone, if you can find '00 to '02 zx6r's for $3500 USD, please buy 'em and ship 'em to me!!! A clean '00 6r would likely bring the equivalent of $4500 USD around these parts... that's a nice chunka profit for me to split with ya... an '02 should bring at least $4800 USD. Man, I'm buying my next used bike in your neck of the woods <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

However, even around here, you're absolutely right about mods adding value, they generally don't... which sucks for people who put thousands into their bikes and then are forced to sell... oh well... good for the used bike buyers...

Zero-60 testing of sportbikes quickly becomes an exercise in wheelie and wheel spin control, if not clutch management. The figure is often not published.

Motorcyclist rode the 1997 ZX-6R (largely the same bike) to an 11.06-second quarter-mile pass at 124.09 mph. Their 60-80 roll-on took 4.68 seconds, and their 80-100 roll-on took 5.25 seconds. They topped out at 154.64 mph in a speed contest.

Motorcycle.com turned in a time of 10.79 seconds at 126.78 mph on the same bike.

probably can't get a 02 for $3500 it's more like around $5000 but a '00 will go for around $3500 or sometimes left.. a '96 . that is a 7 year old bike so ask yourself do you want to pay the same price for a bike 7 years old as a bike 3.. maybe 2 years..

I also seen alot of 98+ Ninjas for $3500-4500 in great condition with as many miles or less. I was debating on buying an 02 for $3500 missing gas tank, lowers, and turn signal and mirrors. Many photos showed the rest of the bike in mint condition. They said it was theft. Anyway it had only ~90 miles on the odometer! I would have bought it if I had extra cash and place to put it. My 01 has 15K miles never been down. Look for deals at the salvage yards.
