Hey everyone, I'm new to the board, just thought I'd introduce myself. The name's Steve, I'm a 23 year old college student and DJ/Producer/Engineer currently living in Dayton, Ohio. I sold my last bike ( 1994 CR125 ) when I was 16. My family and I were transferring to Ohio, and I didn't know if they're be any place to ride, so I decided to take the opportunity to sell it.

I have been considering getting a street bike for about 5 years now, but I've been putting it off due to my parents objection. This year though, they dont seem to object... it fact, to my surprise, my pops has brought it up a couple times. He's been riding Harley's for about 25 years now and I think it'd be pretty neat if we could ride together now and again.

Anyway, I've been tossing the idea around for sometime now, read the Twist of the wrist books, signed up for the MSF course in the beginning of June, etc. At this point I'm just debating what to consider as an option for a first bike. I think I'm fairly well settled on a 600, keeping in mind that until I actually get some experience behind the clip-ons, I have no idea what I'm doing.

The true debate I'm facing is whether to buy new or used. I understand that if I buy a new bike, I'm going to lay it down and make myself angry, but it seems like you dont really save a whole lot by going used. Looking through CycleTrader and on ebay, bikes under 8000 miles or so run from $4500 - $6500+ and it seems to me like at $6000 or higher you might as well get a new bike. There's a couple really nice ZX6Rs at a local shop here and it's very tempting, especially since a good friend of mine is a salesman at the shop (Competition Accesories). Anyway, just wanted to see if any of you had any thoughts...?

Thanks!

Welcome to the board. You can usually find some pretty good deals through the cycle trader or even E-bay. Sometimes you may even run into a sweet deal here on this site. I know I've seen a couple that I'd buy if I had the cash. Good luck in your search.

Welcome, I'm actually about 45min. north of you. Are you at Wright, UD, or Sinclair? Anyways make sure you get the bike you think you'll really enjoy. Hoping your not getting the sportbike for the image, because there are alot of those "squids" out there, but the ZX6R is one of the best all around bikes.

I think most anyone can start on the 600cc and for the most part not outgrow it also. When properly tuned you can take on bigger bikes in most areas. I personally like the feel/size of the smaller bike compared to 1 liters and I'm at 5'11" 230 and it can surely move my a.. . I used to drool over the 12 but now I think its a downsized/souped up Gold Wing.

Make sure to take the MSF course, get your license, some gear and be prepared for a rush the first few times you ride it. If you got plenty of money then by all means get a new bike, that's what I did. However there are many good bikes, with low miles in great condition for almost half. I've seen 00-01 with less then 8K miles going from anywhere $3500-6000. If I get something else it will more then likely be used next time. I hope your friend can get you a good deal at Comp because I personally think the prices are high and Customer Service sucks.

Later,

What's up man. Welcome to the board. I live in Northern Ky, about two miles outside Cincy, but that's not exactly close to where you are. I say buy a used zx6r. You're right, more than likely, you will at some point lay your bike over, or get a little too comfortable with it, and loop it doing a wheelie, or something like that. I would buy one for no more than $4,000 for a starter bike, and then buy a new one later on down the road.

I got my '96 zx6r in January for $3,700 with an HJC helmet and Joe Rocket jacket included. It HAD 13,000 miles on it, but now it has close to 16,000. I make the most out of the weekends:D

When you get your bike, let me know and maybe we can ride a couple times this summer.

Thanks for welcoming me to the board, good to be here. I'm currently at Sinclair, but am planning on transferring to Miami Oxford next spring. I've been part-time since I got out of high school, and it's taking far too long. Hopefully I can finish up my Bachelors at Miami fairly quickly and possibly move on to graduate studies.

Are you the same djphrenzy from 2gnt.com I was Eclipze97 from that board. I was over there for a couple years but got interested in bikes, so I sold my turbo kit, eventually selling my eclipse, sold my 250 ninja, and bought my 03 6R. It was the best decision I ever made, who needs a high 14 second car when they can get a high 10 second bike, that looks much more aggressive [8D] Anyways, welcome, hope you get a cool sixxer soon!!!
