i can tell you this, the timing of 2 strokes is very important. i had an old 2 stroke yamaha that wouldnt start because the timing was screwed up, i gave up on it.

its done with "points" like old muscle cars. usually on the side cover, right where the stator is. setting the timing is done by taking out a spark plug and inserting a dial indicator to the cylinder, you set the piston at a certain length before TDC and set the points to zero. its hard to explain, but you really should get a service manual, it will make things a whole lot easier.
